Adidas has given its iconic Samba a delicious New York makeover, teaming up with streetwear boutique Asphalt NYC on a limited-edition trainer inspired by one of the city's most recognisable Italian pastries.

Just 600 individually numbered pairs of the Asphalt x adidas Samba 'Cannoli' have been produced, with the $130 price tag working out at around £97. The highly limited release arrives as New York's Little Italy celebrates the 100th edition of its famous Feast of San Gennaro, making the timing as significant as the pastry-inspired design itself.

Priced at $130, approximately £97, the Asphalt x adidas Samba 'Cannoli' will release on 25 September 2026, with just 600 individually numbered pairs available. Inspired by New York's Feast of San Gennaro and the classic cannoli, the limited-edition trainer also comes with three interchangeable tongue covers in pink, wheat and brown, allowing wearers to customise the look.

A Samba Inspired by a New York Classic

The collaboration takes the familiar Samba silhouette and turns it into a tribute to the neighbourhood bakeries and Italian-American food culture that have long been part of New York life.

The upper is crafted in glossy brown patent leather, referencing the rich chocolate tones associated with cannoli and other Italian pastries. Wheat-coloured detailing across the toe and heel nods to the crisp, golden shell, while bright pink Three Stripes add a playful hit of colour inspired by colourful pastry counters.

The details become even more literal closer up.

Gold-tone cannoli-inspired lace accessories decorate the trainers, while the sockliner features a graphic depiction of the dessert. Each pair also comes with three interchangeable tongue covers in pink, wheat and brown, allowing the wearer to change the look depending on their style.

There are multiple lace options too, including a speckled design that references chocolate chips or sprinkles.

Most importantly for collectors, every pair is individually numbered 1 to 600, underscoring how small the release is.

Why the San Gennaro Feast Matters

The launch coincides with one of New York's most famous celebrations of Italian-American culture.

The Feast of San Gennaro began in 1926 as a one-day block party in Little Italy and has grown into an 11-day celebration centred on Mulberry Street. The 2026 event runs from 17 September to 27 September, marking its 100th edition.

The festival honours San Gennaro, the patron saint and protector of Naples, and brings food, music, religious events, games and street entertainment to the area. Cannoli is among the traditional Italian-American foods associated with the festivities, making it a particularly fitting inspiration for the new trainer.

That connection gives the collaboration a stronger story than a simple novelty sneaker. The Samba has effectively been designed around a piece of the city's everyday food culture at the precise moment when Little Italy is celebrating a century of its most famous festival.

A Tribute to Everyday New York

For Asphalt NYC, the idea was rooted in familiarity rather than simply creating a colourful shoe. Jadah Orilus, the retailer's operations manager and buyer, said the concept came from the ordinary experiences that help define growing up in New York.

'So much of what makes New York special comes from the things we grow up seeing every day,' Orilus said. 'The neighbourhood bakery, grabbing a box of pastries for family, knowing exactly which spot has your favourite cannoli or rainbow cookie.'

The aim, Orilus explained, was to translate those memories through an Asphalt perspective, resulting in a design that feels playful and nostalgic while still allowing people to personalise it.

From Football Shoe to Fashion Staple

The Samba itself has travelled a long way from its sporting origins.

Adidas introduced the silhouette in the 1950s as an indoor football shoe designed to provide traction on icy surfaces. Its low-profile shape, gum sole, leather upper and distinctive T-toe eventually carried it far beyond sport, with the trainer becoming closely associated with terrace culture, music, skating and contemporary fashion.

The Asphalt collaboration retains those familiar design cues while giving them an unusually specific New York identity.

Rather than simply adding a food-themed graphic, the partnership has worked the cannoli concept throughout the shoe, from its chocolate-inspired patent leather and pastry-coloured details to the gold-tone lace accessories and interchangeable tongue covers.

When Can You Buy the Cannoli Samba?

The Asphalt x adidas Samba 'Cannoli' will launch on 25 September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. ET, priced at $130, approximately £97. Only 600 individually numbered pairs will be available through Asphalt NYC stores and its website, making the limited run one of the defining features of the collaboration.

With its chocolate-brown finish, pastry-inspired detailing and customisable pink, wheat and brown tongue covers, the trainer brings together three distinctly New York ideas: the enduring Samba, the city's Italian-American food culture and the century-old Feast of San Gennaro.

For sneaker fans, the appeal is not just in the novelty of a cannoli-inspired shoe. The limited numbering and tightly timed release give this particular Samba a strong sense of place, turning a familiar fashion staple into a wearable tribute to one of New York's most enduring neighbourhood traditions.
