Ariana Grande appears to have made one relationship update very clear: Ricky Alvarez is back in the picture.
The singer slipped two affectionate photos of Alvarez and herself into an Instagram carousel on 12 August, effectively confirming what fans had suspected for weeks. In one mirror selfie, the pair wore matching white tops and dark trousers while Álvarez wrapped an arm around Grande. Another image showed Grande, dressed in black with bright blue fairy wings, holding onto him in a blurred upside-down shot.
By ordinary celebrity-news standards, that should have been enough to send the internet directly into romantic detective mode.
Instead, much of the conversation swerved towards Grande's appearance.

Grande's weight has been the subject of increasingly intense public discussion in recent weeks, particularly following the release of her 'Petal' music video on 31 July.
Her latest Instagram post once again drew comments from people expressing concern about how thin she appears, with some social media users describing her as looking noticeably smaller than before.
That concern, however, has also reignited a familiar debate: when does worry become invasive commentary?
Grande has repeatedly spoken about how damaging public discussion of other people's bodies can be. Her representative recently confirmed that she will take a break from public-facing work once the 'Eternal Sunshine' Tour concludes on 1 September, citing the 'endless, ongoing public scrutiny'.
The singer later addressed fans directly during a Chicago show, stressing that the decision had been made long before the latest wave of speculation and was not an impulsive reaction to criticism.
In essence, boundaries can be necessary while a positive career experience remains positive.
So while some fans have linked the hiatus to renewed concern about her appearance, Grande herself has explicitly pushed back against that interpretation.

Grande and Alvarez previously dated in 2015 and 2016, but they began sparking reconciliation rumours earlier this summer after reconnecting during her tour. PEOPLE reports that the pair are taking things slowly, with friendship and trust forming the basis of their renewed relationship.
Grande had already been dropping lyrical breadcrumbs.
During her 'Eternal Sunshine' Tour, she repeatedly tinkered with the Ricky line in 'Thank U, Next', replacing the famously dismissive original lyric 'wrote some songs about Ricky. Now I listen and laugh' with considerably warmer versions.
At one Brooklyn show, she changed it to suggest that she and Alvarez 'always find our way back'. The lyric tweak immediately fuelled speculation about whether the exes had rekindled their romance.

The ironic recall moment of their rekindled romance is almost too tidy.
Back in 2018, Grande considered Alvarez as the ex whose songs she could apparently revisit with a laugh.
Eight years later, she has gone from laughing at the Ricky songs to rewriting the lyric while seemingly dating Ricky again. That is less 'thank u, next' and considerably more 'thank u, circle back'.
