Ariana Madix has revealed an unexpected obstacle behind her glamorous Love Island USA wardrobe–some fashion houses are hesitant to lend their designs because the show is a reality programme.
The 41-year-old host, who has fronted the hit dating series since 2024, admitted that convincing designers to dress her can be surprisingly difficult, despite the attention her high-impact looks receive on screen.
Speaking on Marie Claire's Nice Talk podcast on 27 August, Madix explained that her team sometimes has to persuade fashion labels that appearing on Love Island USA will turn into a worthwhile fashion moment.
'It actually is difficult sometimes to convince fashion houses or designers that wearing the look will actually be a moment,' she said.
'I think there's some hesitation sometimes with fashion where they think, "We don't want to loan a reality show", and we have to say, "Trust me, it's gonna look great, it's gonna go far".'
The revelation offers a glimpse into the business of celebrity styling–and suggests that even a television personality with a growing fashion profile can face resistance when seeking designer loans for reality TV.
Why Designers Are Hesitating Over Love Island
Madix's comments suggest the obstacle is not necessarily a lack of interest in her personally, but the perception surrounding reality television.
Designer loans can be an important part of celebrity dressing, with labels gaining visibility when their pieces appear on high-profile stars. But Madix said some fashion houses remain unconvinced that lending a look to a reality show will create the impact they want.
That means her styling team must do more than simply select outfits they love.
'That's another business side of things that takes you out of the excitement of, yeah, we just pick whatever we like,' Madix added.
The admission is particularly striking because Madix has built a strong fashion identity during her time on the show.
Her appearances are carefully styled to make an impact, with the host previously explaining that she wants to appear 'really sexy and confident' in an 'amazing badass look' before switching back to a more relaxed version of herself once the dramatic slow-motion sequence is over.
She was also nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program this year, underlining how far her career has moved beyond her original reality-TV fame.
The Work Behind Ariana's Glamorous Looks
Creating Madix's Love Island USA image also requires considerable preparation behind the scenes.
Her styling involves collaboration between her Los Angeles stylist and an on-set styling team in Fiji, with outfits selected according to the mood and storyline of each episode.
Madix has revealed that some of her season eight looks were chosen at the last minute, while her hairstylist Carl Bembridge told PEOPLE that he travelled to Fiji with more than 70-lbs of hair extensions to help create her polished appearance.
The effort appears to be paying off. Madix has increasingly become one of the show's major fashion talking points, with her looks helping give her hosting appearances a distinctly glamorous identity.
Her latest Love Island USA stint concluded with the season eight finale on 31 August. She is now preparing to return to Broadway, where she will play singer Connie Francis in Just in Time.
For Madix, the designer dilemma highlights an intriguing contradiction in modern celebrity fashion: while some labels may still hesitate to associate their clothes with reality television, her Love Island appearances are helping turn the genre's traditionally casual image into a platform for increasingly ambitious fashion moments.
