Bill Maher has revealed that Ben Affleck has continued to turn down invitations to return to Real Time more than a decade after their heated 2014 debate over Islam Bill Maher/Facebook

More than a decade after one of their most memorable television confrontations, Bill Maher says Ben Affleck still has no interest in returning to his talk show.

Maher revisited his long-running history with the actor during a recent episode of his podcast Club Random, telling comedian Max Amini that Affleck has continued to reject invitations to appear on his programme. The revelation comes 12 years after Affleck, Maher and author Sam Harris became embroiled in a heated debate over Islam on Real Time with Bill Maher.

While the original exchange lasted only a few minutes on television, it has remained one of the most frequently remembered episodes of Maher's show. According to Maher, the disagreement may also explain why Affleck has not returned.

Bill Maher Says Ben Affleck Declines His Invitations

Speaking on Club Random, Maher suggested that the 2014 confrontation remains the main reason Affleck has stayed away from Real Time.

'That's why he hasn't done the show since,' Maher said while discussing the actor's absence.

Despite their differences, however, Maher made it clear that he does not appear to hold a personal grudge against Affleck.

'I love him, but we just are gonna disagree on that one,' the television host said.

When Amini suggested that Maher should invite Affleck back, Maher revealed that he has already been doing so. According to the host, he asks the actor to return every year.

'I ask him every year,' Maher said, adding a personal detail that highlighted the long history between the two men: 'I bought this house from him.'

What Happened During the 2014 Clash?

The dispute dates back to a 2014 episode of Real Time, when Affleck appeared alongside Maher and Sam Harris for a discussion about Islam, extremism and attitudes towards religion.

The conversation became increasingly tense as Harris argued that criticism of Islamic doctrine should not automatically be regarded as prejudice against Muslims. Affleck challenged the argument and questioned whether the discussion was unfairly portraying an enormous and diverse religious population.

At one point, Affleck described the discussion as 'gross' and 'racist' after Maher questioned why he was becoming so hostile towards the subject.

The debate became particularly heated when Harris described Islam as the 'motherload of bad ideas', a remark that visibly frustrated Affleck.

Affleck pushed back by pointing to the more than one billion Muslims who, he argued, should not be stereotyped because of the actions or beliefs of extremists.

The exchange quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from Real Time.

Maher Says the Moment Got Bigger Than Expected

Looking back on the controversy years later, Maher appeared to acknowledge that the confrontation gained a life of its own.

He told Amini that the episode is mentioned to him more often than almost anything else from the programme. Maher also admitted that he did not consider it the best episode the show had produced, but said its emotional nature and the involvement of a major film star helped make it memorable.

The host also suggested that the situation may have become more complicated than the original argument itself.

Maher said he believed Affleck had subsequently communicated with Harris, who had also been involved in the 2014 discussion. He described the original disagreement as something that became exaggerated and emotional.

However, Maher did not suggest that he and Affleck had completely fallen out. Instead, his comments portrayed their relationship as one in which they simply remain divided over the issue.

Could Ben Affleck Ever Return to Real Time?

Maher appeared to leave the door open to another appearance.

'I don't know,' he said when discussing whether Affleck could eventually return. Maher suggested that after 12 years, there could be an opportunity for the two to speak privately and find some common ground.

There is no indication in the source that Affleck has publicly confirmed Maher's account or explained why he has not returned to Real Time. The source states that a representative for the actor was contacted for comment.

For now, the situation remains exactly as Maher described it: he continues to extend invitations, while Affleck has yet to take him up on one.

A Decade Later, the Debate Still Resonates

The enduring interest in the Ben Affleck and Bill Maher clash illustrates just how memorable a heated television debate can become. What began as a disagreement over religion, extremism and stereotyping has continued to be discussed more than a decade later.

Affleck's absence from Real Time has now become part of the story itself, particularly after Maher revealed that he continues to invite the actor back.

Whether the pair eventually share a television stage again remains unclear. For now, though, Maher's latest comments have revived memories of one of Real Time's most controversial celebrity debates — and revealed that the fallout, at least in terms of Affleck's return to the programme, may not be over yet.
