A bizarre scene showing a man floating helplessly in a pool while surrounded by a circle of embracing men has sent the internet into meltdown, with one Reddit user declaring: 'I've never done anything this gay.' The image was widely treated as an example of an extreme masculinity retreat, but the reality is rather different: it comes from a men's wellness experience centred on breathwork, trust and emotional vulnerability.
The scene comes from Breathless Expeditions, an Australian organisation founded by breathwork instructor Johannes Egberts, whose men's programmes focus on mental health, connection and personal development. What looks like an unusual 'alpha male' initiation is actually linked to a practice known as Rebirthing Breathwork, where participants are supported physically and emotionally by other men.
The Pool Scene That Sent Reddit Wild
In the viral image, one participant lies in the water while several other men closely surround him, using their bodies and arms to keep him supported. The sheer intimacy of the moment proved irresistible to Reddit, where commenters quickly turned the picture into a comedy routine.
One user joked about the intense concentration on the man's face as he apparently tried not to get an erection, while another wrote: 'I've seen men having sex with men that's less gay than this lol.' Others piled on with jokes, including one person saying they had a boyfriend but had 'never done anything that gay'.

The 'Alpha Boot Camp' Label Was Wrong
The biggest twist is that the viral portrayal as an 'alpha male' or aggressive masculinity retreat does not accurately describe the programme behind the image. Breathless describes its men's expeditions as spaces where participants can explore mental health, connection, stress and their inner selves, rather than simply proving physical toughness.
Its current Men's Expedition description specifically talks about the pressure men face to be tough, strong and stoic, while also encouraging them to become more vulnerable and emotionally open. The programme combines outdoor challenges, camaraderie, breathwork and group support, creating a very different picture from the stereotypical image of an alpha boot camp.
Rebirthing Breathwork Puts Trust at the Centre
The pool exercise is designed around vulnerability, with one participant surrendering control while others physically support him in the water. The idea is to create an intense sense of safety and trust, allowing participants to experience the feeling of being completely held by a group.
That explains the extraordinary body language in the photograph, even if it does little to explain the internet's reaction to it. Rather than being a strange display of macho dominance, the exercise is intended to explore emotional openness and the ability to accept support from other men.
Breathless' New Take on Masculinity
Breathless has built its retreats around the idea that modern men can benefit from both physical challenge and emotional connection. Its programmes can include hiking, cold-water immersion, meditation, breathwork and team challenges, while participants are also encouraged to share personal experiences and support one another.
The organisation says its approach aims to bridge ancient breathing practices with modern understandings of physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. It has also said it has trained more than 20,000 people in breathwork since its establishment in 2018, while donating 10% of its profits to conservation projects involving the Great Barrier Reef and Amazon rainforest.
It's More Than a Pool Hug
Despite the viral photograph, the wider retreat experience is considerably more active than simply floating around in a pool.Breathless describes its men's expeditions as action-based experiences involving outdoor adventures, difficult conditions, shared challenges and plenty of opportunities for participants to build trust.
A 2026 Men's Expedition, for example, includes breathwork, meditation, movement through the mountains, team-building activities and cold-water experiences. The programme also stresses supporting one another through setbacks, while creating space for men to talk openly about the pressures surrounding masculinity.
Reddit Keeps Mocking the 'Gayest' Retreat
The internet, however, was never going to let the photograph pass quietly, particularly after users interpreted it as an 'alpha male' advertisement. One commenter joked that the men had become so heterosexual they had somehow 'broken through heterosexual and gone back around to being gay', perfectly capturing the surreal tone of the reaction.

Yet behind the jokes is a surprisingly serious attempt to challenge the traditional idea that masculinity means keeping emotions locked away.
The viral healing pool may look ridiculous to thousands of amused viewers, but for the men taking part, the point appears to be almost the exact opposite of macho posturing: learning that strength can sometimes mean allowing somebody else to hold you.
