Britney Spears biopic
Britney Spears' upcoming biopic has yet to announce its leading lady, but some fans already know what they want: a fresh face to play the Princess of Pop Britney Spears/YouTube

Britney Spears has spent decades being one of the most recognisable women on the planet. Now, some fans think the best person to play her in a biopic should be someone nobody recognises at all.

With Universal Pictures' long-awaited adaptation of Spears' memoir The Woman in Me still moving forward, casting remains one giant glitter-covered question mark. No actress has officially landed the role yet, but that has not stopped fans from debating who should step into some extremely famous shoes.

Amid the usual parade of celebrity names, one increasingly popular answer is refreshingly simple: none of them.

Britney Fans Want a Fresh Face

One Reddit user argued that the biopic should follow the casting approach that once introduced audiences to young performers who had not yet become household names.

'For the biopic, I want "unknown" people,' the poster wrote, suggesting that a newcomer would let audiences see Britney rather than a famous actress playing Britney.

Other users largely agreed, especially given that Hollywood has been in a chronic state of recycling the cast list for a while now. As it seems, fans are looking for new talent to light up the screen, not another A-lister whose name could induce fatigue at the first syllable.

'Britney should be an unknown actress,' one wrote. 'She honestly has to be born for the role.'

Another said known actors could work perfectly well in supporting roles, but maintained that the Princess of Pop herself should be played by 'an unknown actor. Even a newcomer.'

The logic is not particularly difficult to follow. Spears already comes with decades of imagery, performances, interviews, choreography, headlines, and pop-cultural baggage attached to her name. Casting another celebrity with an equally recognisable persona risks turning the film into a game of 'Spot the Transformation' rather than letting Spears' story take centre stage.

One commenter pointed to Selena, noting that Jennifer Lopez was far less famous when she took on the role that helped propel her to superstardom.

In other words, fans do not necessarily want someone who can arrive at the audition already looking famous. They want someone who can leave it that way.

Could Jack Black Play the Role of Britney's Dad?

Naturally, Reddit could not discuss serious casting philosophy without eventually putting Jack Black in the Spears family.

The original poster joked that their nightmare scenario involved Hollywood stuffing the film with huge stars, adding: 'Imagine Jack Black as Britney's dad.'

For clarity, there is no reported indication that Jack Black is being considered to play Jamie Spears. The mental image simply escaped containment, and for some people, is hard to unsee.

Another commenter suggested the film could instead mix a newcomer in the lead with more established actors playing Britney's parents and other supporting figures.

Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Holt, and Everyone Else Enter the Fantasy Auditions

An absence of official casting has never stopped the internet from conducting auditions on Hollywood's behalf.

Olivia Holt and Sabrina Carpenter are among the names circulating heavily in prediction markets and fan discussions, while Emma Roberts, Sydney Sweeney, Millie Bobby Brown, Addison Rae, and others have also been floated online.

So for now, the Fan Casting Department remains open for business. The Actual Casting Department is still driving fans crazy with suspense, so to speak.

Britney's Movie Is Still Happening

What is official is the team behind the camera. Universal reportedly acquired the rights to Spears' bestselling 2023 memoir The Woman in Me in 2024, with Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu attached to direct and Marc Platt producing. Liz Meriwether, creator of New Girl and co-creator of Dying for Sex, joined the project as screenwriter this year.

Casting, however, remains the missing piece of the Britney movie puzzle. Perhaps the fans campaigning for a completely new face have a point. Whoever plays the role of Britney Spears will already be representing one of pop music's most famous faces, voices, and pop cultural legacies.

Maybe the smartest casting choice is not casting another star. Maybe it is making one.
