Brooke Shields became famous as a child, but not every part of her early career is remembered fondly. One particularly uncomfortable chapter has resurfaced online, involving nude photographs taken of her when she was just 10 years old.
The images have reignited questions about how the photoshoot was allowed to happen in the first place, particularly the role of the actress's mother, Teri Shields. At the time, Teri was not only Brooke's mother but also her manager, and she gave consent for the photographs to be taken and published.
The Controversial Nude Photoshoot
The photographs were taken in 1975 by photographer Garry Gross when Brooke was 10. The shoot was financed by Playboy Press, and the resulting images were later published in Sugar 'n' Spice. According to court documents, Teri signed consent forms as Brooke's legal guardian, giving permission for the photographs to be used. The family was paid $450 (around £248) for the session.
The controversy did not end there. As Brooke grew older and her modelling and acting career became increasingly successful, she and her mother tried to stop Gross from continuing to distribute the photographs.
The dispute eventually became a major legal battle. It centred partly on whether the consent Teri had given when Brooke was a child could later be withdrawn.
The photographs resurfaced again decades later when artist Richard Prince used one of Gross' images as the basis for his 1983 artwork Spiritual America. The work later caused controversy when it was displayed at London's Tate Modern in 2009.

Mother Teri Draws Fresh Backlash
The story has triggered a strong reaction online, with many commenters focusing on Teri's decision to give consent.
Some questioned how a parent could agree to photographs of a 10-year-old being published, with comments asking where Brooke's parents were and why the adults involved did not stop the shoot.
Others accused Teri of using her daughter for fame and money. One commenter bluntly wrote: 'What a f*cking disgrace. What happened to protecting your child, woman?' Another pointed out that Brooke had 'always been exploited'.
The reactions have been particularly intense because people today view the idea of adults consenting to the publication of nude images of a child through a very different lens.
Some online commenters have also labelled the photographs as 'child abuse' or 'child pornography'. One user said: 'This literally just made me sick to my stomach.'

From Child Star to Advocate
Brooke Shields' career had already taken off by the time the legal battle about the photos began.
She started modelling as an infant and became a major child star after being cast as the lead in Pretty Baby at 11. She went on to appear in The Blue Lagoon and Endless Love, becoming one of the most recognisable young actresses of the 1980s.
Her childhood was revisited in the 2023 documentary Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields, in which she spoke about growing up in the spotlight, her relationship with her mother and the sexualisation she experienced from a young age.
Today, Shields is no longer simply remembered as the child star from those controversial photographs. She has built a career across acting, writing, entrepreneurship and advocacy, and in 2024 was elected president of Actors' Equity Association. Her story has changed considerably since those early modelling days.
