The Cannes Film Festival has always been where cinema meets spectacle. This often where fashion pushes the boundaries of what a red carpet look can be. But in 2026, organisers are drawing a much firmer line.
With the rise of sheer gowns, near-transparent dresses, and headline-grabbing 'naked dressing,' Cannes is tightening its dress code to keep things firmly within formal territory. According to the festival's official guidance, nudity is not permitted anywhere on the red carpet or within festival venues.
Cannes Says No to Nudity and Oversized Gowns
The biggest talking point this year is the outright ban on nudity or sheer 'barely-there' dressing. The rule specifically targets outfits that rely on transparency or illusion styling to reveal the body — a trend that's been everywhere on recent red carpets.
It marks a notable shift at a time when celebrity styling has increasingly leaned into provocative couture, where 'less fabric, more impact' has become a defining fashion strategy.
At the recent Met Gala, for instance, several personalities offered their own interpretations of the theme 'Costume Art' through elements of naked dressing. Simone Ashley, Gigi Hadid, Alex Consani, Irina Shayk, and Doechii were among those who delivered some of the most memorable looks of the night.
Alongside the nudity ban, Cannes has also placed limits on oversized fashion pieces. Voluminous dresses, especially those with large or extended trains, are now prohibited if they 'hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater,' the guideline stated.
Fashion pieces that rely on exaggerated silhouettes or structural drama may therefore need to be reworked or avoided entirely for official red carpet appearances.
Strict Rules on Shoes and Bags
Footwear remains another regulated category at Cannes. Sneakers are explicitly prohibited for gala screenings and official red carpet appearances. However, a notable shift in recent editions is the acceptance of elegant flat shoes and sandals for women.
This update has been widely interpreted as a move towards comfort and inclusivity, replacing earlier expectations that often prioritised high heels for formal red carpet events.
Nevertheless, the overall expectation remains formal and polished, with footwear required to match evening attire standards.
Accessories have also come under scrutiny in the updated Cannes dress code. Large bags, backpacks, and oversized purses are not permitted during gala screenings.
In addition, entry is strictly conditional on compliance with the dress code. Festival staff are authorised to deny red carpet access to guests who fail to meet the required standards.
Formal Wear Remains Mandatory
Despite the tightening of restrictions, Cannes continues to uphold its traditional formalwear expectations. For gala screenings, especially those held in the evening, black-tie attire remains mandatory.
Women are generally expected to wear long gowns, cocktail dresses, or tailored evening wear, while men are required to wear tuxedos or dark suits.
Cannes Redefining Fashion Boundaries
Cannes 2026 is clearly signalling that while fashion innovation is welcome, it has its boundaries. The crackdown on nudity shows how seriously the festival is taking its identity as a formal cultural institution, even as red carpet fashion becomes more daring year after year.
At the same time, the rules around footwear, accessories, and oversized gowns show that Cannes is just as focused on logistics as it is on aesthetics.
The red carpet may still deliver unforgettable style moments, but in 2026, those moments now have to fit within a much more defined frame.
