Former Baywatch icon Carmen Electra has reflected on the cultural impact of the smash-hit 1990s television drama. The bombshell actress is defending its legacy as an innocent and glamorous fantasy that pushed network television boundaries without crossing the line.
The 54-year-old actress shot to global fame playing lifeguard Lani McKenzie in the original series from 1997 to 1998. She spoke candidly about why the show captured such a unique place in pop culture history.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News Digital, Electra acknowledged that while the series became world-famous for its sun-drenched slow-motion beach runs and skimpy red swimsuits, it remained on primetime television.
It's a Fantasy, Not Porn
'It had a certain tone to it that it was just such a fantasy, and maybe it was the first time on television you could see so much skin because we really were playing lifeguards, right? So, we could be in these skimpy outfits,' Electra remarked.
She noted that while audiences at the time were surprised by how revealing the outfits were on television screens. The actress added that the series offered a wholesome form of escapism that families could enjoy together without embarrassment.
'And it wasn't porn,' Electra stressed. She clarified the distinction between the show's playful glamour and explicit adult content. 'You know what I mean? They didn't have to sneak away and find a VHS tape to, like, sneak and put in. You can watch this.'
The Show's Surprising Paradox
Electra pointed out a surprising paradox. Despite the show's reputation for high-fashion sex appeal, it served as an unexpected source of practical public education. Fans frequently reached out to tell the cast how much they had learned from watching the lifeguards perform rescues on screen, particularly when it came to life-saving techniques.
Electra quipped that the intensive CPR training provided on set stayed with her long after filming ended. 'I learned how to give CPR. I could save someone right now if I needed to,' she joked.
Looking ahead, Electra revealed that she would be excited about putting the iconic red swimsuit back on for an appearance in the upcoming Baywatch television reboot. Her former co-star and on-screen love interest, David Chokachi, who played Cody Madison, has already signed on to reprise his role as a mentor to a new generation of lifeguards.

Electra suggested that bringing her character back for a cameo alongside Chokachi would be a fun full-circle moment for long-time fans. 'I think it would be so cool if I just came in for an episode to surprise him and say hi. They fall in love again, who knows?' she said.
However, the star drew a firm line at repeating the rigorous, physically demanding lifeguard swim training required when she originally joined the cast in the late 90s, admitting that the original endurance tests were 'really tough'.
