Johnson was asked on The Run-through with Vogue podcast how she had trolled someone recently, and she named her little brother, Deacon. She had told him to stop wearing flip-flops. The interviewer called that a public service, and she agreed.
'Gentlemen shouldn't be wearing flip-flops. Ever,' the interviewer exclaimed. Johnson then aimed her comments at what she described as Gen Z college students. Her reasons were simple: feet are gross, toes are gross, and she says the wearers are smelly and always clammy. Her advice was to put some shoes on and be a man.

It was all said in good humour, and the question was about trolling, so it comes across as a dig at her brother rather than a serious ruling on men's style. The idea that Deacon's friends are college students comes only from Johnson's own description.

Deacon did not take the hint, according to Johnson. By her account, she had already told him directly to stop, so what happened at her dad's house came after that warning was ignored.
She says she was visiting her dad when a group of his friends walked in wearing rainbow flip-flops. Her reaction was immediate: 'Get out. Get right on out of here. Out of the house.'

This is not the first time Johnson has raised the subject. On 21 October 2025, Vogue posted a 32 questions video on YouTube in which she was asked about any red flags in men. Her answer was, 'Men who wear flip flops in public. Run.'

A third comment was blunter still: 'NEVER take any advice from a woman on how to be a MAN.' A commenter writing from the land down under had a different worry, joking that Johnson would not enjoy life there.
