Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic The Odyssey has already become one of the most talked-about films of the year, but not all of the attention has been focused on its legendary story or star-studded cast. Instead, Elliot Page's casting as Greek warrior Sinon has sparked a heated debate on social media, with some users questioning why the actor was chosen to play a male warrior from ancient Greek mythology.
The controversy grew after a video from The Odyssey world premiere in London showed Page meeting fans, signing items and posing for photos. While the event celebrated the highly anticipated film, some online reactions quickly turned negative as critics targeted Page's role.
There isn’t a rational person on earth who thinks this is a man. She spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to look like a ventriloquist dummy. pic.twitter.com/EjiRirOYnQ

Social Media Erupts Over Elliot Page's Casting
Following one particular clip going viral, several social media users expressed frustration over Page portraying Sinon, a Greek warrior in Homer's epic poem.
Some comments argued that Hollywood had other options for the role, with one viral post writing: 'Casting Elliot Page as a Greek warrior? There are dozens of strong, ripped guys out there built for that role like prime Brad Pitt in Troy.'
The same user claimed the decision was made simply to create controversy, saying that it was 'not about the story' but about generating attention online.
Others questioned whether Page could convincingly portray the ancient warrior, with some directly referencing his gender identity and arguing that he does not fit the role.
One critic wrote: 'Not a single moviegoer cares to see a 5 ft. nothing female larp as a Greek male warrior.' Another added: 'They want us to believe she's a man... Still not fooling anyone.'

Why His Character Is Causing Controversy
In Greek mythology, Sinon is a soldier known for his role in the Trojan War. He is most famously associated with convincing the Trojans to bring the Trojan Horse inside their city, allowing Greek soldiers hidden inside to launch an attack.
Because Sinon is traditionally understood as a male figure, some viewers questioned Nolan's decision to cast Page in the role. The criticism reflects a wider debate in entertainment about whether actors should always match the gender, background or physical characteristics of historical and fictional characters.
At the same time, supporters of the casting choice have pointed out that adaptations often reinterpret classic stories, with filmmakers making creative decisions when bringing ancient texts to modern audiences.
Inside Elliot Page's Transition
Page publicly came out as transgender in 2020 and announced that he uses he/they pronouns. Since then, he has continued building his career in film and television while becoming one of the most recognisable transgender actors in Hollywood.
The role of Sinon also marks a reunion between Page and Nolan, who previously directed him in the critically acclaimed 2010 science-fiction thriller Inception.
While Page's casting has attracted criticism from some corners of the internet, it is only one part of the larger conversation surrounding Nolan's ambitious adaptation.

Why Fans Are Watching The Odyssey Closely
Beyond Page's role, The Odyssey has generated huge interest because of its impressive cast and Nolan's reputation for creating visually ambitious films. The project is based on Homer's ancient Greek epic, which follows Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War.
The film features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and Elliot Page.
Despite the online debate, The Odyssey remains one of Hollywood's biggest upcoming releases. Christopher Nolan's adaptation is set to bring one of the world's oldest stories to a new generation when it arrives in cinemas on 17 July.
