In some corner of the multiverse, Emily Blunt is not walking red carpets or headlining blockbuster films. Instead, she is carefully translating United Nations speeches into Spanish.
In this universe, however, she is a successful actress with an estimated $80 million net worth and a string of critically acclaimed roles to her name. But the path that led her there was far from inevitable.
Before Hollywood came calling, Blunt had her sights set on a very different future. Speaking to BBC Radio 2, the actress revealed that she once dreamed of working for the United Nations as a Spanish translator, inspired by a lifelong love of languages and her mother's linguistic talent.
While being a translator at the United Nations is an impressive and reputable career path, many are glad she chose acting. Otherwise, her The Devil Wears Prada character, Emily Charlton, might've had to learn how to say 'I love my job. I love my job. I love my job' in Spanish.
Translating Movie Roles Into Award-Winning Performances
Instead of being meticulously planned, acting entered her life almost by accident. Blunt has previously shared that she began performing in school plays as a way to manage a stutter. It was during one such performance, a rock opera staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, that her trajectory changed. An agent in the audience spotted her talent and offered to represent her, setting in motion a career she had not seriously considered.
From there, the transition was swift. After finishing school, Blunt began auditioning and established herself as one of the industry's most versatile performers. Today, she has appeared in more than 45 films, with recent projects reportedly earning her multimillion-dollar paydays, including a $15 million role in her recent film Disclosure Day. The actress is also the recipient of various accolades, including a Golden Globe, Actor Awards, and several nominations at the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards.
A Career Bluntly Redirected
Despite the redirection, the actress' early ambition has not entirely faded into the background. Blunt's affinity for language can be seen in her onscreen work, from mastering accents to learning dialogue in Russian, Korean, and Mandarin for various roles. For her latest project, she even developed an entirely original alien language composed of clicks and hums. This detail suggests that her initial passion has found expression in unexpected ways.
The contrast between the two paths is striking, but it is not a story of one dream replacing another. Rather, it is a reminder that careers rarely unfold in straight lines.
Blunt herself has acknowledged the twist of fate. Reflecting on her earlier aspirations, she admitted she is glad she did not pursue translation after all. The sentiment was echoed by director Steven Spielberg during the same interview, who remarked that audiences are fortunate she chose acting instead.
From starring alongside Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (1 and 2) to battling aliens with Tom Cruise in The Edge of Tomorrow and now communicating with aliens in Disclosure Day, Hollywood wouldn't look the same if Emily Blunt's journey did not diverge from the road she initially mapped out.
