A routine training flight over central Argentina turned into an unimaginable ordeal after a flight instructor calmly looked at his student and said, 'You know what you have to do, carry on', before removing his headset, unfastening his seatbelt and jumping from the aircraft without a parachute. In a matter of seconds, an ordinary flying lesson became a desperate fight for survival.
The 22-year-old trainee was suddenly left alone in the cockpit with no instructor by her side, forcing her to rely on everything she had learned to keep the aircraft under control. Despite being in complete shock, she managed to safely land the plane, transforming what could have been an even greater tragedy into a remarkable story of composure under extreme pressure.
A Routine Lesson Turned Tragic
The incident happened on Saturday near Toledo in central Argentina. Flight instructor Leandro Andrés Bertazzo, 42, was conducting a lesson aboard a Cessna 150 with his student, Rosario, when the routine exercise took an unexpected turn.
According to the student's account, Bertazzo looked at her and calmly said, 'You know what you have to do, carry on'. Moments later, he removed his headset and seatbelt, opened the aircraft door and jumped from the moving plane. Authorities later confirmed Bertazzo was found dead following the incident.
Rosario Was Left To Fly Alone
Despite the shock of watching her instructor disappear from the aircraft, she managed to stay focused and continued flying the Cessna before bringing it safely to Coronel Olmedo Airport. The aircraft landed without damage, preventing what could have become an even greater tragedy.
Eduardo Álvarez, director of the Flying Parrot Córdoba flying school where Bertazzo worked, praised the young pilot's response, describing her actions as 'clear, decisive, mature and professional'. Although Rosario already held a flying licence, she had only limited experience, making the successful landing even more remarkable.
No One Saw It Coming
Álvarez said there had been no indication the experienced instructor was planning to take his own life. Earlier that same day, Bertazzo had reportedly completed another training flight with a different student without any obvious signs that something was wrong.
'He made this tragic decision on board an aircraft with another person by his side', Álvarez said. 'It's impossible to think about it or understand it, but the human mind is so complex.' He also described Bertazzo as 'a beautiful person with a great smile', adding that everyone at the flying school had been left shocked.
Opening the Aircraft Door Was Not Easy
One detail that has surprised many people is how Bertazzo managed to leave the aircraft while it was in flight. Álvarez explained that opening the door of a light aircraft such as a Cessna 150 is far from simple.
He compared it to trying to open the door of a car travelling at around 200 kilometres per hour, with the airflow creating significant resistance. His comments highlight how unusual the incident was and why aviation experts consider such cases extremely rare.
Investigators Search for Answers
Argentina's public prosecutor has launched an investigation to establish exactly what happened during the training flight. Officials are examining both the circumstances inside the aircraft and Bertazzo's personal background.
Local media reports have claimed he had previously received neuropsychiatric treatment, although those reports also suggested only close family members were aware. Authorities have not linked those reports to the incident and continue to examine all possible factors. Investigators are expected to review witness statements, flight details and other evidence before reaching any conclusions.
One Life Was Saved
While the investigation continues, one fact stands out from the extraordinary chain of events. Bertazzo's final instruction became the guidance Rosario relied upon during the most frightening flight of her life.
Instead of giving in to panic, she followed her training, maintained control of the aircraft and landed safely, turning what could have been an even deadlier disaster into a remarkable story of composure under unimaginable pressure. The circumstances surrounding Bertazzo's final moments remain unclear, but the young student's calm actions ensured that only one life was lost that day as investigators continue searching for answers.
