A group of protesters dressed as Gandalf the Grey has turned heads in Buenos Aires, Argentina, after gathering outside billionaire Peter Thiel's home. The unusual demonstration, filmed outside his mansion in the Palermo Chico neighbourhood, quickly spread online for its costumes, chants and very specific Lord of the Rings references.
At first glance, it looks like an elaborate fantasy-themed joke. But there is a very deliberate reason the protesters chose Gandalf. Their target is not only Thiel himself but also one of his most recognisable businesses, Palantir, and his growing financial presence in Argentina.
Gandalf Protesters Gather Outside Peter Thiel's Home
The protesters reportedly call themselves Ciudadan@s Gandalf and were seen carrying a banner featuring Gandalf's famous warning: 'You shall not pass.' The phrase was followed by an Argentine insult directed at Thiel.
Their chants were just as pointed. In one circulating clip, protesters directly addressed Thiel, singing: 'You want Palantirs [an object from The Lord of the Rings] to see the future. Look yourself in the mirror, you're gonna see a stupid man.'
Another video showed the group singing to the rhythm of YMCA, with lyrics mentioning another executive, Mercado Libre founder Marcos Galperin.
The demonstration came as Thiel's links to Argentina were receiving renewed attention. His investment firm recently bought a 1% stake in Vista Energy, an oil company operating in the country's Vaca Muerta shale formation. The stake was worth about £58 million based on the reported $76 million purchase price.

Why Protesters Are Dressed as Gandalf
The costumes make much more sense once you know what 'Palantir' means.
In Tolkien's fictional world, palantíri are seeing stones that let characters see distant places and communicate with others. Thiel co-founded Palantir Technologies, a data-analysis company, in 2003, and the business took its name from those objects.
That gives the protest its central joke. Gandalf is one of the heroes of The Lord of the Rings, while the palantír is a powerful tool that can also be manipulated and abused. By dressing as Gandalf, the protesters effectively turned Thiel's Tolkien-inspired company name into a protest symbol.
The 'you shall not pass' banner adds another layer. It borrows one of Gandalf's best-known lines and applies it to the protesters' message about Thiel's presence and business interests in Argentina.

Who Is Peter Thiel and What Does He Own?
Thiel is a billionaire entrepreneur and investor best known as a co-founder of PayPal and Palantir. He also founded Founders Fund, a venture capital firm that has invested in numerous major technology companies.
His influence stretches beyond business. Thiel has become a prominent figure in US political and technology circles and has maintained relationships with influential entrepreneurs, investors and political figures.
Argentina has recently become another important part of that story. Thiel has met President Javier Milei, who has promoted a libertarian economic agenda, and bought a mansion in an upscale Buenos Aires neighbourhood.
Inside Peter Thiel's Powerful Private Network
Thiel's influence also extends to Dialog, a private network founded by Thiel and other prominent figures. The group has reportedly brought together hundreds of influential people from technology, finance and politics.
Its reported members and attendees have included high-profile figures such as Elon Musk, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, US senators Ted Cruz and Cory Booker, and more.
