A nude photograph of Harry Styles is now on show at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and fans are arguing over whether he belongs in an exhibition about queer lives. The question dividing them is simple. Is Harry Styles a queer icon, or does the title require him to say the words himself?
The picture is an outtake from a shoot with photographer Tim Walker. It is part of Fairyland: Love and Legends, a show about queer identity, love and community that Walker spent five years making. The exhibition runs until 7 February 2027 and also features portraits of Chappell Roan and Ncuti Gatwa.
Does Harry Still Fit the Queer Theme?
Walker photographed dozens of activists, performers, artists, and writers for the show, and he said, 'Your difference is your power.' Roan has spoken openly about her sexuality. Styles has not publicly put a label on his sexuality, and that is what many people are reacting to.

Replies on X are blunt. One user complained about 'honoring a queerbaiter instead of an actual gay popstar.' Another asked, 'Is he even queer?' A third chimed in, saying he is 'only ever seen out with women.' Media reports have linked him to Zoë Kravitz since August 2025, and earlier to Taylor Russell and Olivia Wilde, mostly based on sightings.

Critics who use the word queerbaiting argue that a mainstream star can borrow queer style for commercial gain without facing the risks that openly queer artists face. The label beside the portrait cites his fundraising and advocacy for LGBTQ+ communities.
Fans Debate His Fashion and Public Image
Other replies defend him. 'You don't need to be out officially to be a queer icon,' one user wrote. Another said people 'always seem to need the actual words from his mouth' and compared his situation to George Michael's.
His wardrobe plays a big role in that case. Styles wore a blue Gucci dress for his 2020 Vogue cover shoot, and the dress went on display at the V&A in 2022 as part of Fashioning Masculinities: The Art of Menswear.

A portrait of him in the dress was then included in the National Portrait Gallery's History Makers exhibition in 2024, which honoured people who have shaped contemporary culture. For the cover of the Harry's House album, he wore an embroidered Molly Goddard blouse, baggy denim and ballet-style shoes.
Supporters point to that history, along with years of pearls and painted nails, as proof that he has broadened what a male pop star can wear. Opponents want more than fashion. They argue that style alone does not meet the bar for a queer icon.
The Story Behind Styles' Controversial Nude Portrait
Walker and Styles have worked together before. Walker shot the artwork for Styles' 2019 album Fine Line, and the nude on show is an outtake from one of their shoots. Walker made his name in the 1990s with fairy-tale shoots built on elaborate sets and props, and he has since photographed Lady Gaga, Frank Ocean, Hunter Schafer and Miriam Margolyes.

That background explains the tone of the exhibition, which is playful, colourful and staged. It also explains why some fans see the nude as part of that tradition and others see a pop star hung among people who have been open about who they are.
While the debate around his queerness plays out in London, Styles is on his Together, Together tour, with a 30-night residency at Madison Square Garden scheduled to run until 31 October. He has also announced 2027 stadium dates, beginning in Phoenix on 2 April and ending at Wembley in late August.
