Harry Styles has revealed that he once felt unsafe leaving his home during One Direction's rise to fame, describing how the band's intense public attention affected his life offstage. The singer credited an outgoing former girlfriend with helping him feel more comfortable exploring London on foot.
The 32-year-old discussed the impact of sudden fame in an interview with Rolling Stone, published on Thursday, 8 October. Styles recalled how even time at home could feel restrictive before an experience with a former girlfriend helped change his perspective.
How One Direction Fame Changed His Life Offstage
'In the early days, when I was in the band, so much of the hotel experience felt very locked-in,' Styles explained. 'When I'd be home, it felt like, "Oh, it's not safe for me to be out."'
Formed during the 2010 series of The X Factor, One Direction became one of the biggest pop groups of the 2010s. Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne attracted an enormous international following, bringing intense public attention that extended beyond their performances.

The scale of that attention was evident during the group's early years. A 2013 report in The Independent about the band's documentary, This Is Us, highlighted the security challenges surrounding the group, including fans chasing its tour bus.
For Styles, fame extended beyond performing and travelling. His recollection suggests that even when he was at home, the prospect of going out could feel daunting rather than offering the freedom he might have expected.
However, a personal experience eventually helped him reconsider that feeling. Styles recalled that spending time with an outgoing girlfriend encouraged him to venture out instead of staying indoors.
Ex-Girlfriend Encouraged Him To Explore
Styles recalled having a particularly outgoing girlfriend who wanted to explore London during a visit. He admitted that he worried she would find it strange if they spent three days indoors. 'I had a girlfriend who was very outgoing, and she was coming to London and I was like, "Oh, if we just sit in my house for three days, she's gonna think I'm nuts,"' he said.
The pair decided to walk around the city together, giving Styles an opportunity to reconsider his fears. 'So we walked everywhere, and it was this realisation for me: "Oh, it's fine to be outside,"' he added.
He said the experience 'kind of broke that thing', describing it as a turning point. What might have seemed like an ordinary activity became a way for him to feel more comfortable venturing beyond the confines of his home.
Styles did not identify the former girlfriend in the interview, leaving her identity unclear. Although he has been linked to several high-profile women over the years, his comments do not clarify which past relationship he was discussing.
Styles is currently dating actress Zoë Kravitz, with the couple reportedly engaged. The pair have kept much of their relationship private.

Why Walking Has Become Important to the Singer
Styles also explained that walking offers a perspective that can be difficult to experience when travelling by car. He suggested that being at street level lets people notice details and encounters they might otherwise miss.
'I read something about walking being the artist's kind of perspective,' Styles told Yorke. 'Because you're at ground level and you see things that you just don't see if you're driving everywhere.'
His remarks suggest that walking has taken on a significance beyond simply getting out of the house. It also gives him an opportunity to observe the world around him, something he believes can offer a valuable perspective for an artist.

The conversation touched on the balance between public recognition and personal privacy, a subject Styles has discussed previously. In a 2022 interview with Rolling Stone, he explained that he had never publicly discussed his life away from work and believed maintaining that boundary had benefited him. 'I've never talked about my life away from work publicly, and found that it's benefited me positively,' he said at the time.
Styles' latest reflections offer a glimpse into how he has navigated the pressures of fame while finding ways to engage with the world on his own terms. For the singer, maintaining his privacy does not necessarily mean withdrawing from everyday life.
