Hellstar took a 2000s running shoe, pulled out the laces, and set it on fire. The Hellstar Megaride S2, the latest Adidas Originals collaboration with the Los Angeles streetwear label, arrived in shops worldwide on 8 August, wrapped in a white-to-black flame gradient and finished with a chrome heel.
The shock value is only half the story. Hellstar built its following through small, closely guarded drops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami, and this is the first time the partnership has gone global. Fans now have to decide whether a cult favourite can keep its edge once almost anyone can get hold of it.
Breaking Down the Hellstar x Adidas Megaride S2 Design
The original Megaride was a chunky running shoe from the early 2000s, built with a segmented sole for cushioning. Hellstar has kept that bulky shape but changed almost everything else.
The laces have gone, replaced by a zip on the tongue, and the upper is made from a moulded synthetic material known as RPU, left partly open so the mesh underneath shows through. Chrome-finished supports, a metallic heel and a see-through sole add a futuristic glint.
The campaign images lean into the same mood. Hellstar's guiding idea is to shine bright in a dark world, and the official visuals treat the shoe like a film star rather than an item on a shelf, with fire and shadow doing most of the storytelling. The brand describes fire as something that changes things rather than simply destroying them, giving the launch more personality than a standard product shoot.

Release Dates, Prices and Colourways
There are two versions to know about. The Adidas Originals Hellstar Megaride S2 in White/Off-White/Core Black (style code KH8086) launched on 8 August 2026 for $200 (£170), combining the Megaride's responsive cushioning with Hellstar's visual identity.
The second version, the Black/Red, releases on 10 October 2026, also priced at $200. It swaps the white fade for a black-to-red gradient flame upper and pairs it with blacked-out Megaride cushioning.
It lands alongside the wider Megaride FW26 collection, which goes on sale on the Adidas website and in the CONFIRMED app, and extends the partnership from shoes to clothing. The range includes trefoil T-shirts with flame details and an embellished Hellstar beanie, finished with early-2000s touches such as distressed fabric and raw edges.

Is the Megaride S2 a Future Grail or Just Overhyped?
Early reaction is sharply divided. One leading fashion title called it 'a statement-making piece of Y2K modification,' arguing that Hellstar had gone well beyond a simple recolour by stripping away the traditional TPU cage in favour of smooth synthetic overlays. The same review greeted the flame graphics and transparent outsole with a cheeky nod to the era's tattoo trends.
Buyers on Reddit's r/adidas were far less forgiving. One poster said the shoe 'feels and looks extremely cheap,' pointing to glue and paint marks and a lack of comfort, while another called the design 'absolutely awful' even if the build quality were perfect. Over on r/Sneakers, the look inspired jokes, including one comparing it to someone racing out for a giant tub of dip and a bulk pack of heartburn tablets.

The debate comes down to design versus execution. Supporters see a bold reinvention of an archive runner, while critics question the finish and the taste. With the Black/Red pair arriving soon, the Hellstar x Adidas Megaride S2 will face fresh scrutiny.
