A married mother of two has just rewritten the Miss USA history books. Justus Kelley, 31, from Arlington, Virginia, was crowned Miss USA 2026 at the Adrienne Arsht Centre in Miami. She is the first married mum to win the national title in the pageant's 75-year history.
The win also ended a 56-year wait for Virginia. The state's last Miss USA champion, Deborah Shelton, took the crown back in 1970. Pageant fans online wasted no time pointing out just how overdue the moment was.
How Old Is Justus Kelley and Where Is She From?
Kelley, a foster mother of two, works as a philanthropic advisor for the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities or ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the author of a children's book series. Her hometown has declared an official Justus Kelley Day in recognition of her community work.
She has also worn secondhand and thrifted outfits throughout her pageant run, using her platform to push accessibility in an industry built on expensive gowns. Along the way to the crown, she picked up the Best in Swimsuit award.
Can Married Women and Mothers Compete in Miss USA?
Until 2023, Miss USA required contestants to be single and childless, a policy that had stood since the pageant began in 1952. That September, the organisation scrapped both the marriage ban and its long-standing age cap, following a similar move by Miss Universe, opening the competition to women well past their twenties for the first time.
Supporters call it overdue modernisation. Traditionalists say it strips away the pageant's original format, and that fight has followed the brand through several rocky ownership changes since.
A Diamond Anniversary With Its Own Drama
This year's edition had its own drama before a single gown hit the runway. The CW had been set to broadcast the 75th anniversary show, but the network pulled out of both Miss USA and Miss Teen USA last week. The Queen Beauty Network stepped in and streamed the pageant live instead.
The night carried extra weight as the pageant celebrated its 75th Diamond Anniversary, staged under the theme '75 Years of Icons' to mark the women who have held the crown since 1952. Kelley's win folded neatly into that milestone, giving the anniversary edition its own distinct place in the pageant's history.
Outgoing titleholder Audrey Eckert of Nebraska added an unscripted moment of her own, stumbling twice during her final walk before handing over the crown. The clips went viral within minutes, but rather than embarrassment, Eckert earned a standing ovation, with viewers online praising her for laughing it off instead of freezing up.
