Katy Perry's claim that Russell Brand resented her professional success has resurfaced as her ex husband faces a criminal trial in the UK, renewing attention on the singer's account of their troubled marriage.
The pop star previously described Brand's reaction to her position of authority during her tours as 'very controlling', admitting that his behaviour left her hurt and upset. Her comments, made in a 2013 interview, have attracted renewed attention as the comedian faces serious criminal charges, all of which he denies.
Perry has not publicly linked her experiences during their marriage to the criminal allegations against Brand, and her earlier remarks are not evidence in the case. However, her account of their relationship has drawn attention again as the proceedings at Southwark Crown Court in London put Brand's past conduct under renewed scrutiny.
Perry's Claims About Brand's Controlling Behaviour
Perry opened up about the breakdown of her marriage in an interview in 2013, revealing that Brand struggled with their professional dynamic when she took charge. The singer explained that her role as the boss while touring had become a source of tension between them.
'He didn't like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting', she said.
The Teenage Dream singer also spoke about the emotional toll of their separation, admitting that she initially felt responsible for the marriage ending. She later said she had come to understand that the situation was not her fault, while suggesting there were details about the relationship she had chosen not to disclose publicly.
'I can't necessarily disclose [it] because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day', Perry said. She added that she eventually let go of the responsibility she had felt, concluding: 'This isn't because of me; this is beyond me'.
Perry did not explain what she meant by the 'real truth' behind their separation, and it would be speculative to connect the remark to the allegations against Brand. She has not publicly addressed the current trial or indicated that her comments about their marriage relate to the charges he faces.
Brand's Rape and Sexual Assault Trial
Perry and Brand met at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards and married in October 2010, but their relationship lasted little more than a year before Brand filed for divorce in December 2011. Their separation was finalised in February 2012, with the singer later reflecting on the experience in her Vogue interview.
Brand's criminal trial began at Southwark Crown Court in October 2026, with the comedian facing seven charges, including three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, relating to allegations made by six women. He has pleaded not guilty to all seven charges, and the trial is expected to last up to 10 weeks.
The proceedings follow a 2023 joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4's Dispatches, which reported allegations of sexual assault and other misconduct against Brand. He denied the allegations at the time, maintaining that his sexual relationships had been consensual.
Perry's earlier account of feeling controlled during her marriage remains separate from the criminal case now before the court. As the trial continues, her comments have renewed interest in the relationship that ended more than a decade ago, while Brand's guilt or innocence of the charges will be determined through the legal process.
