Kevin Spacey recently appeared on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, where he opened up about his career downfall, legal battles, and sexuality. But while the Oscar-winning actor framed the interview as part of his gradual comeback, it also reignited public outrage over the sexual misconduct allegations that have followed him since 2017.
His latest comments quickly brought renewed attention to one of the most serious accusations against him — actor Anthony Rapp's claim that Spacey made unwanted sexual advances when Rapp was just 14 years old. Online, many were far from sympathetic, with critics openly mocking Spacey's remarks and questioning why he was being given a platform at all.
Kevin Spacey Discusses Sexuality and Career Fallout
During the interview, Spacey spoke candidly about what he described as his slow emergence from 'Hollywood jail' after years of professional exile. 'I feel much more welcomed,' he said, suggesting public attitudes may be shifting as more people revisit the legal outcomes of his cases.
Spacey emphasised that he had won in court, pointing to his legal victories in both the US and the UK. He specifically referenced the Anthony Rapp civil lawsuit, in which a New York jury found him not liable on all counts.
During the interview, he also reflected on his sexuality, saying that coming out was a difficult and long-delayed process. He stated: 'People within the gay community made jokes about me as if being famous and coming out was like an easy thing.'
When asked whether his coming out was prompted by the 2017 controversy, he answered: 'No, not at all. I was actually ready to come out for two years before the scandal happened.'
His sexuality has remained a sensitive topic since the scandal, when he publicly came out as gay in a statement responding to Rapp's claims. That move drew widespread backlash, with many accusing him of using his coming-out announcement to deflect from the allegations.
Social Media Reacts With Mockery and Anger
If Spacey expected public sympathy, social media quickly showed otherwise.
Online reaction was harsh, with many users responding with sarcasm, mockery and anger. One comment read: 'Leave the gay community out of your dark deeds Kevin. This is all on you.'
Critics also questioned why Maher gave Spacey a platform, while others argued that Spacey's remarks showed little accountability.
'He is just retconning so he can paint himself as a victim again. He has had such a victim complex ever since he got busted as a sexual predator,' one user wrote.
The whole interview immediately raised eyebrows. For many critics, that controversy still lingers.

The Allegations That Changed Everything
The allegations against Kevin Spacey first exploded in October 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making a sexual advance at a party in New York back in 1986.
Rapp said he was 14 at the time, while Spacey was 26. According to Rapp, Spacey allegedly picked him up, placed him on a bed and made unwanted advances.
That accusation opened the floodgates.
In the months that followed, multiple men came forward with allegations ranging from sexual harassment to assault and inappropriate conduct. The accusations spanned decades and included claims from actors, former colleagues and industry insiders.
In 2018, Spacey also faced criminal charges in Massachusetts involving allegations that he sexually assaulted an 18-year-old busboy in Nantucket in 2016. That case was later dropped.
Then in 2023, Spacey was acquitted in London on nine sexual offence charges after a high-profile trial.
Despite avoiding a criminal conviction, the damage to his career was immediate and significant, as he was dropped from multiple projects at the time.
