Kobi Levi's unusual 'Pixel' shoe is getting fresh attention online after new photos of the design began spreading across social media this week. With chunky black, white and silver blocks forming the back and heel, the shoe looks almost like an old video game image brought into the real world.
A viral post shared on Thursday, 3 September showed the shoe from the side while being worn, describing it as a 'leather mosaic heel featuring a pixelated design'. The post had reached more than 439,000 views and 4,800 likes when captured, introducing thousands of new viewers to a design Levi actually created several years ago.
The Pixel Shoe Explained
Although the shoe is suddenly appearing across social media again, Levi's 'Pixel' design is not a brand-new 2026 release. Records of his work show that the shoe dates back to 2023, meaning its latest viral moment is more of an online comeback than an official launch.

The design starts as a sleek black pump with a long pointed toe, but the back of the shoe changes into a group of stacked square blocks. These pieces are made from leather in black, white and silver shades, giving the heel a broken-up digital look that is very different from a normal high heel.
The viral description of the design as a 'leather mosaic' with a pixel look is therefore accurate. Its square shapes copy the basic look of pixels seen on computer screens and early video games, which is why the shoe appears almost like an 8-bit object that has stepped out of a screen.
Kobi Levi Makes Wearable Art
This playful design fits closely with Levi's wider approach to making shoes, which often mixes fashion with humour and unusual everyday objects. The Tel Aviv-based designer has spent years creating footwear inspired by animals, food, household items and other shapes that people would not usually connect with shoes.

Levi has previously described the shoe as his 'canvas', allowing him to turn simple footwear into something closer to a small sculpture or piece of art. Many of his designs begin with a familiar image before he changes the heel, sole or upper part of the shoe to create a visual joke.

His past creations have included designs inspired by bananas, ducks, coffee, cats and other playful subjects that are easy to recognise at first glance. The Pixel shoe follows the same idea, but instead of copying an object from daily life, it takes inspiration from digital screens and the blocky look of old computer graphics.
From Cardboard to Gaga
Levi's interest in shoe design started when he was still young and growing up in Tel Aviv, where he began experimenting with ideas using simple materials. He has said that he started creating shoe shapes from cardboard while still in high school, before later studying design professionally.
He graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2001 and then worked as a freelance footwear designer after finishing his studies. During those early years, he learned more about how shoes are built while also developing the strange and playful style that would later make his work stand out.
Levi began sharing his more artistic shoe designs online around 2010, and the unusual creations quickly started attracting attention outside Israel. One of his biggest moments came when Lady Gaga wore his 'Double Boot' design in the music video for 'Born This Way', bringing his work to a much wider international audience.
More Than a Digital Trick
The Pixel shoe may look like something made with computer effects, but its unusual appearance comes from real materials and careful construction. The square leather pieces are built around the back of the shoe and heel, creating the illusion of an image enlarged until its individual pixels can be seen.
Levi has also explored the pixel idea in more than one version, using similar block-shaped details across different shoe shapes and colour combinations. This shows that the design is part of a wider idea rather than a one-off experiment made only for a single pair.
Its sudden return to social media also shows how an older fashion design can quickly feel new again when it matches a current visual trend. With gaming style, retro graphics and digital-inspired fashion continuing to influence online culture, Levi's 2023 Pixel shoe now looks especially suited to the moment.
