Racism is often discussed through the lens of male perpetrators, but the latest controversy surrounding France captain Kylian Mbappé is a reminder that prejudice is not defined by gender. Whether it comes from a politician, a public figure or an anonymous social media user, racist abuse remains equally damaging and deserves the same level of accountability.

That conversation has intensified after Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla launched a series of racist attacks against Mbappé following France's 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on 4 July. The comments prompted a swift response from the footballer himself and united French sporting and political leaders in condemning the abuse.

Mbappé Condemns 'Despicable' Remarks

The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward did not stay silent after Amarilla published offensive posts targeting both his race and identity.

Writing on X on Monday, 6 July, Mbappé addressed the senator directly, saying: 'Mrs Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and not worthy of your position.'

He continued: 'You do not represent Paraguay, the country that has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition.'

The France captain added that her comments had overshadowed Paraguay's impressive World Cup campaign, writing: 'Through your lack of awareness and your uninhibited racism, the entire world has already forgotten your team's run and historic effort at this World Cup.'

He concluded with a firm warning against intolerance, saying: 'I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.'

The Comments That Sparked International Outrage

The controversy began after France narrowly defeated Paraguay in Philadelphia, with Mbappé scoring the winning penalty to send Les Bleus into the World Cup quarter-finals.

Following the match, Amarilla posted a string of remarks attacking the French captain. She referred to him as a 'colonised Cameroonian' who was 'pretending to be French' while also insulting his appearance and character.

In separate posts, she claimed Mbappé looked frightened throughout the match and even suggested Paraguay's players should have slapped him after the final whistle. She later made further racist remarks, including comparing the footballer to a chimpanzee.

The comments quickly spread across social media, drawing criticism from fans, politicians and sporting organisations alike. While football rivalry often fuels heated debate, many observers argued that Amarilla's posts crossed the line into blatant racial abuse.

France Responds With One Voice

The response from France was immediate and united. The French Football Federation (FFF) condemned Amarilla's comments, describing them as 'completely abusive and unacceptable'.

In its statement, the federation said: 'How can one hold such a speech? These words are delicate and reprehensible. They must be prosecuted here as well as elsewhere.'

The FFF confirmed it would refer the matter to French prosecutors while expressing its full support for Mbappé, the national team and every victim of racist abuse.

The statement concluded: 'These words dishonour those who hold them and those who spread them. The players of Équipe de France represent France; it is our country that is being insulted.'

French President Emmanuel Macron also backed the striker, with the Élysée Palace confirming that he stood 'with Kylian Mbappé and the French team in the face of the racist attacks directed at the Bleus' captain'.

Meanwhile, reports indicated that Paraguay's president and the country's foreign ministry also distanced themselves from Amarilla's remarks, signalling that they did not reflect the nation's official position.

More Than A Football Story

The incident has become about far more than a World Cup match.

Mbappé, who was born in Paris to a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, has repeatedly spoken about diversity and proudly representing modern France. Throughout his career, he has been one of football's most recognisable voices against discrimination, making his latest response part of a broader stand against racism in sport.

The episode also highlights the reality that racist abuse continues to plague elite athletes despite years of anti-discrimination campaigns by football authorities. Social media has amplified that problem, allowing hateful comments to spread worldwide within minutes.

Importantly, this case also challenges assumptions about who commits racist abuse. The fact that the offensive remarks came from a female politician reinforces the message that racism is not linked to gender. Accountability should apply equally, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a man or a woman, an elected official or an ordinary social media user.

A Wider Message Beyond The World Cup

As France prepares for its quarter-final clash with Morocco, attention will inevitably return to football. However, the controversy surrounding Mbappé serves as another reminder that the sport's biggest battles are not always fought on the pitch.

The overwhelming support shown by the French Football Federation, President Macron and officials from both countries demonstrates that racism cannot be excused because of politics, rivalry or personal opinion. The message emerging from this episode is clear: respect should never depend on race, nationality or gender.

Football may divide supporters for 90 minutes, but standing against racism should unite everyone. Regardless of who speaks the hateful words, prejudice has no place in the modern game—or in society.
