If anyone still believes fashion belongs only to the young, one charming couple from Taiwan are proving otherwise. Armed with nothing more than abandoned laundry, a playful spirit and a grandson with a creative eye, Sho-Er Hsu, 84, and Wan Ji Chang, 83, have gone from quietly running a neighbourhood laundromat to becoming beloved Instagram icons.
Their story is not just about clothes. It is about rediscovering joy, finding purpose later in life and reminding the world that growing older does not mean giving up on having fun.
The Taiwanese Couple
For nearly 60 years, Sho-Er and Wan Ji have operated Wan Sho Laundry in Taichung City, Taiwan. Over the decades, hundreds of customers have forgotten to collect their clothes, leaving behind shirts, jackets, hats and even unusual costume pieces.
According to the couple, around 300 items have been abandoned over the years. Under their own rules, anything left unclaimed for more than a year becomes fair game. Rather than allowing the forgotten garments to gather dust, the couple found an unexpected way to breathe new life into them.
The Grandson Behind the Fashion Icons
The idea came from their 31-year-old grandson, Reef Chang, who noticed that his grandparents were becoming bored during quieter moments at work. What began as a simple attempt to brighten their days soon became something much bigger.
'It was my grandson's idea', Wan Ji recalled. Admitting he was unsure at first, he remembered asking, 'Will anybody want to look at this?' Reef took on the role of stylist and photographer, encouraging his grandparents to pose in the discarded outfits and share the results online.
From Folding Shirts to Instagram Fame
Their following quickly climbed into the tens of thousands, eventually surpassing 130,000 followers. Fans from around the world fell in love with their playful poses, infectious smiles and effortless chemistry.
Even more surprising was the attention they began receiving away from social media. The pair admitted they only realised how famous they had become when strangers started recognising them in public.
'I didn't think people would like it', Wan Ji said. Meanwhile, Sho-Er embraced the overwhelming support with warmth and humour. 'Knowing that people still like me makes it feel like I have more grandsons and granddaughters', she said.
Stories Behind Their Stylish Looks
The couple's outfits range from elegant vintage ensembles to sporty streetwear. One day they might be wearing oversized sunglasses and classic hats. The next, they are posing in Adidas tops and bucket hats with the confidence of seasoned models.
Sadly for fashion lovers, Reef revealed that there have been no forgotten luxury labels hidden among the piles. 'There are no designer brands, only vintage thrift clothes', he explained.
Some of the most memorable finds, however, are costume pieces that hint at lives once lived. 'They are very unique to their owner', Reef said. 'Somehow they forgot to take them back.'
Why Fashion Was Already Part of Their Lives
According to Reef, Wan Ji has always insisted on wearing neatly ironed suits while working. 'He thinks that if we are running a laundromat but look dirty, then no one will come in', Reef explained. 'He thinks it shows his professionalism.'
Sho-Er also had a fashionable streak in her younger years. 'When my grandma was young, she was a fashionable girl', Reef said, revealing that she still owns wardrobes filled with stylish pieces from decades past. Nowadays, comfort often comes first, but her natural flair has clearly never disappeared.
Style Has No Age Limit
Age, they have shown, does not prevent people from trying something new, embracing creativity or connecting with others. Reef admitted he was astonished by the account's success, describing it as a blessing that brought renewed energy into their home and motivation into the family business.
At a time when social media often celebrates youth above all else, Sho-Er and Wan Ji offer something refreshingly different. They remind us that joy can be found in unexpected places, confidence never goes out of fashion and sometimes the most extraordinary stories begin with a pile of forgotten laundry.
