Kylie Jenner is putting matte lips back in the spotlight, but this time, the famously velvety finish comes with a plumping promise.

The beauty mogul has launched the new Plumping Matte Lip Kit through Kylie Cosmetics, pairing a plumping lip liner with a liquid to powder matte lip colour designed to create the appearance of a fuller, more defined pout. Both products contain HotFlux, which the brand says helps visibly plump the lips.

The launch arrives as beauty trends move towards a softer interpretation of matte make up, following years in which glossy lips, lip oils and high shine finishes dominated social media and beauty counters.

For Jenner, it is also a notable return to the aesthetic that helped make her beauty brand famous, only with a formula aimed at delivering more dimension and comfort than the flat matte looks of the past.

Kylie Jenner Gives the Classic Lip Kit a Plumping Twist

The new kit follows a familiar two step routine.

First comes the Plumping Lip Liner, which is designed to define and contour the lips before being filled in. It has a creamy texture intended to glide across the lips, while HotFlux is included to provide the product's plumping effect.

The second step is the Plumping Powder Matte Lip, a highly pigmented liquid formula that dries down to a soft powder matte finish.

Used together, the products are intended to create a sculpted lip with a blurred appearance while maintaining the visual effect of fuller lips.

Importantly, the claim is about appearance rather than permanent lip enlargement. The products are marketed as creating a fuller looking pout, making the combination particularly suited to consumers who want the overlined, defined effect associated with Jenner's signature makeup style without relying solely on a glossy finish.

The kit is available in four combinations: Kylie, a dusty rose; Candy K, a warm pink nude; Dolce K, a taupe nude; and True Brown K, a deeper brown shade.

Matte Lips Are Making a Softer Comeback

The launch taps into a wider beauty shift.

Glossy lips and lip oils have become staples of the modern make up routine, particularly as consumers embraced hydrated, reflective finishes. Jenner's latest collection instead puts emphasis on pigment, definition and a diffused texture, without completely abandoning the fuller lip effect that has become closely associated with her brand.

That distinction is key to the modern matte revival. Rather than bringing back the intensely dry, flat lipstick looks of previous decades, contemporary matte products are increasingly focused on softer textures and blurred edges.

Kylie Cosmetics is also putting longevity at the centre of the new formula. The brand claims the lip liner can last up to 24 hours, while the Plumping Powder Matte Lip is designed to last up to 12 hours.

The Plumping Matte Lip Kits are listed at $35 on the Kylie Cosmetics website, with the individual products also sold separately.

For Jenner, the launch neatly combines two elements of her beauty legacy: the sharply defined lip that became synonymous with her early Kylie Cosmetics success and the industry's current appetite for more understated, soft focus make up.

After years of shine taking centre stage, Kylie Jenner is betting that the next big lip look will be matte, just considerably more polished, plumped and modern.
