Lupita Nyong'o wore three custom GapStudio outfits inspired by a basic T-shirt to the 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards on Monday, 2 November, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Designed by Zac Posen, the looks transformed the brand's signature jersey fabric into eveningwear, taking the actress from a red cropped top to two full-length gowns in a single night.
The Black Panther star attended as a presenter, but her wardrobe also celebrated a milestone for the brand. Gap Inc., the parent company of Gap, received the Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion during the ceremony, recognising its approach to design, branding and storytelling.
What Did Lupita Nyong'o Wear to the 2026 CFDA Awards?
Nyong'o opened the evening in a red cotton-jersey ensemble featuring a gathered cropped T-shirt and matching floor-length skirt. The top featured a twisted front, while the skirt incorporated a knot detail at the back. She carried a light-wash denim jacket and completed the outfit with jewellery from Tiffany & Co.'s Elsa Peretti collection.
For the ceremony, the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave actress changed into a white GapStudio gown with a plunging neckline and gathered waist. The sleeveless design replaced the recognisable T-shirt silhouette with a more formal shape while retaining the fabric that inspired the collection. Wearing the gown, Nyong'o joined designer Francisco Costa to present the American Womenswear Designer of the Year award to Rachel Scott of Diotima.
Her third outfit introduced another interpretation of the same material, this time in navy blue. The backless racerback gown was paired with a cropped denim bomber jacket and a matching denim clutch. Together, the three outfits moved from casual separates to evening gowns without abandoning Gap's familiar fabrics.

The designs were created by Posen, Gap Inc.'s executive vice-president and creative director, who drew inspiration from the classic American T-shirt. He described the foundation of the outfits as 'T-shirt jersey, the fabric at the heart of Gap'. Rather than replacing the material with traditional eveningwear fabrics, he used its softness and drape to create three different silhouettes.
Celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger worked with Nyong'o to develop the looks, focusing on comfort alongside the requirements of the formal ceremony. Erlanger described their approach as 'playful reinvention', combining the custom clothing with accessories from Tiffany & Co., Bucherer and Ana Khouri. The styling retained denim elements throughout the evening, keeping each outfit connected to the American retailer.
Nyong'o said the clothes reflected how she prefers to dress away from public appearances. 'My off-duty style is relaxed, effortless, and comfortable,' she explained as she discussed the designs. She also emphasised her preference for pieces that let her express her personality, describing the evening's wardrobe as a modern take on familiar basics.
Gap's CFDA Innovation Award Adds Another Layer
The three looks arrived on a significant night for Gap Inc., which received the Innovation Award presented by Amazon Fashion. Actress Demi Moore presented the honour to the company, represented by chief executive Richard Dickson and Posen. The recognition acknowledged Gap's efforts across product development, creative collaborations and fashion storytelling.
GapStudio launched on 3 April 2025 as a premium design segment within Gap, offering retail collections alongside exclusive custom creations.'Under Posen, the initiative has explored ways to reinterpret clothing traditionally associated with casual American dressing, including denim, shirting and T-shirts. Its presence at the CFDA Awards placed those familiar wardrobe staples alongside designs from established luxury fashion houses.

For Posen, the strategy centres on 'making the clothes everyone knows feel essential in a new way'. Nyong'o's three outfits demonstrated that approach through changes in colour, construction and styling, all originating from the same everyday fabric. Her appearance also coincided with Scott's second American Womenswear Designer of the Year victory, bringing the evening's fashion and award presentations together.
