Madonna's highly anticipated return to the MTV Video Music Awards was meant to be a big comeback, but some viewers were distracted by what they perceived as obvious lip-syncing.
The 68-year-old singer opened the 2026 VMAs on Sunday, 27 September, marking her first appearance since 2003. She performed 'Bring Your Love' with Sabrina Carpenter–a track from her latest album, Confessions II. Charli XCX later joined the performance for 'Danceteria Afterhours'.
However, the performance quickly drew attention for a different reason, as some viewers accused Madonna of lip-syncing, particularly during parts of the set.
Fans Question the Performance
Several viewers claimed the lip-syncing appeared evident when the microphone audio didn't match Madonna's vocals.
One user posted a video showing Madonna's voice in the background, even though she wasn't moving her mouth.

One viewer commented, 'Madonna was lip-syncing. Lame'. Another said she 'has been in the game far too long to be that obviously lip-syncing'.
However, the reaction was not entirely negative. Some viewers praised Madonna as a pop icon and said they enjoyed the show, even if they questioned her singing.

Some users also criticised Madonna's appearance, suggesting she could have aged gracefully instead of looking like a caricature of herself.
One user on X commented, 'Let's focus on Madonna's botched face and how she can barely open her mouth'.
A Longstanding Allegation
Questions about Madonna's use of pre-recorded vocals have persisted for years.
In 2004, Elton John publicly criticised Madonna's nomination for Best Live Act at the Q Awards, questioning whether lip-syncing qualified as a live performance.
Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, denied the allegation. Madonna then addressed the controversy in a November 2004 CBS interview.
When asked if she was upset by Elton John's claims, she responded, 'Not at all. Please, if I start getting mad at people who criticise or poke at me, I'd be permanently mad'.
Elton later admitted his criticism was made 'in the heat of the moment' and described Madonna as a great artist, writer and performer.
Super Bowl Incident
The issue surfaced again during Madonna's 2012 Super Bowl halftime performance.
Viewers questioned whether parts of her performance, particularly during 'Give Me All Your Luvin', were lip-synced or relied on pre-recorded vocals. Reports at the time criticised her singing and raised concerns about its authenticity.
Her performance also received praise from celebrities such as Katy Perry, Serena Williams, and Sharon Osbourne.
Before the show, Elton John joked that Madonna should 'lip-sync good', referencing their earlier disagreement about her live vocals.
Back on the VMA Stage
Madonna's 2003 performance with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera is still considered one of the VMAs' most memorable moments. Over 23 years later, her return to the VMAs has renewed discussion about her place in pop culture.
During the event, Madonna won Artist of the Year and received a career-high 13 nominations.
The performance also connected her with a new generation of artists widely influenced by her work.
Sabrina Carpenter has cited Madonna as an inspiration for her own career. Charli XCX has also described Madonna as someone who 'paved the way for us all' when discussing their collaboration on the new track.
