Mikayla Nogueira controversy
Mikayla Nogueira is turning attacks about her appearance into a POV Beauty campaign at Sephora, but critics say their distrust goes far beyond her looks @mikaylanogueira/Tiktok

Mikayla Nogueira's latest POV Beauty campaign at Sephora is doing something most beauty brands would normally avoid: putting the hate comments front and centre. Point of View Beauty, the TikTok creator's beauty brand, has turned criticism about Nogueira's appearance into advertising for its 'Beauty From Every Angle' campaign, pairing her image with comments about the way she looks online and the line, 'Cancel my angles all you want. I'm owning every one.'

But the campaign has reopened a much older argument about Nogueira, whose rise from Ulta employee to one of TikTok's biggest beauty influencers has repeatedly raised questions about authenticity. In a Reddit discussion of the campaign on Saturday, 3 October, one critic wrote: 'She's so toxic. Nothing she says or does will redeem her, so all she resorts to anymore is rage bait posts.'

Why Mikayla Nogueira's Critics Don't Trust the Message

Nogueira's most famous controversy remains the 2023 'Lashgate' dispute. In a sponsored TikTok for L'Oréal Paris Telescopic Lift mascara, she showed dramatically fuller lashes after applying the product, prompting viewers and beauty creators to accuse her of adding false lashes between shots. Nogueira denied the allegation in the comments, writing that the result came from 'three/four coats and my tight liner', but 'Lashgate' has continued to follow discussions about the credibility of her product reviews.

It was not her first viral backlash. In 2022, an older clip resurfaced in which Nogueira said she had 'literally just finished working at 5:19', before telling viewers to 'try being an influencer for a day'. The quote became a meme as critics called it out of touch, although the viral clip was taken from a longer response to a commenter who had told Nogueira to get a nine-to-five job.

More recently, critics have compared Nogueira's own photos and videos with candid images from public appearances, alleging that filters or editing explain differences in her appearance. Others have questioned the consistency of her distinctive Massachusetts accent across different videos. Nogueira addressed the speculation in March 2026, saying her accent is real but that she sometimes exaggerates it and previously used a more polished 'radio voice'. Those claims remain largely based on online comparisons and viewers' interpretations rather than proof of undisclosed editing.

'Cancel My Angles' Brings Old Criticism Back

POV Beauty presents 'Beauty From Every Angle' as a self-acceptance project. On the brand's website, Nogueira says: 'I've got good angles and I've got bad angles—but the internet has a way of heightening the negativity. Words matter. But I'm deciding to own my angles.' Customers are also invited to share photos and stories about features they once wanted to change but have learned to embrace.

Some critics say their objections to Nogueira were never simply about whether she looked good from a particular angle. One commenter in the Reddit discussion wrote that 'the main issue many people have with her appearance is the lies', arguing that saying she is being cancelled for her angles makes the attention appear to be 'just people being mean'. The same commenter cited 'Lashgate', allegations about filters and criticism of Nogueira's accent as reasons some viewers distrust her.

Other commenters directed their frustration at Sephora for giving POV Beauty such a prominent retail platform. One commenter asked whether it was 'a flex to work with an influencer that's so widely disliked', while another said they had 'lost all desire to shop with Sephora after this partnership'. Some responses also crossed into insults about Nogueira's physical appearance, rather than criticism of her advertising or business practices.

Sephora Keeps Backing POV Beauty

POV Beauty launched at Sephora on 3 September, bringing Nogueira's previously online-only brand into all Sephora stores across the US and select locations in Canada. Sephora currently lists 15 POV Beauty products spanning makeup, skincare and gift categories. The retailer also featured POV Beauty during its September debut on TikTok Shop, with Nogueira hosting the livestream that kicked off the new shopping channel.

The new advertising has now given critics another place to revisit the controversies that have followed Nogueira for years. Instead of discussing primers, lip products or skincare, much of the online conversation has returned to false-lash allegations, filters and whether viewers trust the creator selling them beauty products. One commenter summed up the reaction more simply: 'Yikes, this isn't doing what they think it is.'
