Ms Rachel has given one little boy a much happier introduction to puppets after his family's viral video sparked allegations of racial discrimination at a Connecticut library event.
Micah Whitaker said a Darien Library employee repeatedly overlooked his 17-month-old son, Messiah, using a green puppet during a children's event at Darien Commons. In footage Whitaker posted to TikTok, the employee can be seen interacting with several other children while Messiah stands nearby. Whitaker alleged that his son, who is Black, had already been passed over for several minutes before he began recording.
The video quickly travelled beyond storytime. It had accumulated more than 6.3 million views by Wednesday, 21 October, while the employee was reportedly placed on administrative leave as the library investigates what happened.
Soon after, children's entertainer Ms Rachel joined the conversation with an offer involving a friendlier puppet encounter. 'I'd be so honored to meet your little boy and he can meet Herbie any time (our puppet) I'll message you!', she commented.
Ms Rachel Wants Messiah To Meet Herbie
Ms Rachel reached out to the family and offered to meet Messiah in person. Better yet, she wants to introduce him to Herbie, one of the puppet characters viewers of her children's content know. The gesture struck a heartstring or two online.
'The part where she offered to let him play with all the puppets got me,' one Reddit user wrote. 'She gets it, it's about making a kid feel seen and special.' Another simply declared: 'Ms Rachel the realest.'
Messiah's Father Says He Was Treated Differently
Whitaker said the moment captured on camera wasn't the first time the employee appeared to overlook his son. 'From where I was standing, my son was definitely being treated differently,' he said in the video's voiceover. Whitaker said he watched other children receive attention while Messiah did not, leaving him questioning whether he was misreading the situation before ultimately deciding to document it.
The footage prompted strong reactions online, although viewers disagreed over whether it proved racial discrimination. One Redditor with experience as an early childhood movement instructor said it was 'hard to default to overt racism' based solely on the footage, but added that they could not understand how the employee could have missed the child.
Other internet users were a lot less hesitant to call it as they saw it. 'Damn that's messed up. You can hear the hurt in the father's voice,' one commenter wrote.
Darien Library Is Investigating
The employee has reportedly been placed on administrative leave while the incident is reviewed. The viral footage shows the interaction that prompted Whitaker's complaint, but it does not establish the employee's motive by itself. The investigation will have to determine what happened beyond the portion captured on camera.
The good news for Messiah is that another puppet encounter may already be waiting. 'Can't wait to see the meeting with the family and Ms Rachel!' one Redditor wrote. If that meeting happens, something tells us this little boy won't have to worry about being left out of storytime anymore.
