NewJeans is back, but not exactly as you remember them.
On 22 July, the K-pop group marked their fourth anniversary with a midnight drop titled 2026 Summer of NewJeans, featuring Minji, Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein. The visuals are familiar and very on-brand, but that's because the difference is not in the concept; it is in the headcount.
Danielle is no longer part of the line-up. Her departure from the group in late 2025 followed a lengthy legal dispute with agency Ador, capping off one of the most closely-watched contract battles in recent K-pop history. What made it out of the storm is a four-member group making its way back into the spotlight after months of controversy.
Calling this a comeback almost seems too neat, as it could easily be deemed a reset.
From Legal Battle To Reset
The road to seeing the massively popular K-Pop group pick up a microphone again was anything but smooth.
In November 2024, all five members announced plans to terminate their contracts, citing mistreatment as the reason. What followed were legalities that ultimately sided with Ador, restricting the group's independent activities and forcing a return under the agency.
By late 2025, Hanni, Haerin, and Hyein had resumed activities. Minji's status remained unclear for months until her reappearance in the latest promotional rollout.
Now, with four members fronting new content together for the first time since 2024, the ensemble appears to be moving forward, albeit a little lighter on the headcount.
Same Aesthetic, Fewer Members
Visually, little has changed. The teasers still channel NewJeans' signature formula covered in soft lighting and Y2K street style maximalism that once launched them to stardom overnight, literally.
However, for fans, there is an evident Danielle-shaped absence on the promotional material.
On digital platforms, such as Reddit, reactions have been a mixed bag of support, scepticism, and collective fatigue.
'I hope they do well... but it will take time to get used to four', one fan wrote, voicing a thought that's been on the minds of many.
Another Redditor got candid about the expectations for this discourse-tainted comeback, saying, 'Honestly, I doubt they can recapture their magic'.
The 'magic' most fans fear will disappear can be found in the prior numbers. For instance, NewJeans had their names all over Spotify, crowned as the fastest to hit 1 billion streams. Achieved in just 219 days, the former five-piece band dethroned BLACKPINK's Lisa and BTS' Jungkook.
On top of that, they also placed numerous tracks in the Billboard Hot 100 early on in their careers. You didn't have to be a fan to recognise when 'OMG', 'Attention', 'ETA', or 'Ditto' was blasting from the speakers at your favourite convenience store.
Not Looking for Attention
If there is one thing NewJeans does not lack, it is attention. Even during their hiatus, the group maintained strong streaming numbers and cultural relevance. Tracks like 'Hype Boy' were still charting despite the ongoing legal wranglings.
The support received from the fandom (Bunnies) was nearly a living, breathing thing. From signing court petitions and organising physical truck protests to launching crowdfunding campaigns, NewJeans had their fans by their side the entire time.
NewJeans, New Era
Their first release post-hiatus is expected to perform well, as the evident curiosity alone guarantees that.
The real question is longevity. Will the group maintain its identity without its original five-member dynamic? Will the public reception stabilise after months of controversy? Are the members still comfortable working under these conditions? And will the music still hit the same?
As one fan on Reddit put it, 'They'll do well at first. The real test is what happens next.'
NewJeans is not the first group to return after highly-publicised upheaval, but few have done so under this level of scrutiny.
The stakes are high, the expectations higher, and the margin for error is noticeably thin.
Whether this version of NewJeans becomes a continuation or a completely different story all hinges on the next move. For now, all fans see is four members, the same name, and a new chapter.
With the new promotional campaign activating headlines once again, supporters now await the 'ETA' of the new NewJeans.
