Sandra Bullock has revealed that she began grieving her longtime partner Bryan Randall four years before his death, offering a rare glimpse into the private pain she carried while he battled ALS.
The Practical Magic 2 star, 62, opened up about Randall's illness during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast, explaining that he had asked her not to publicly discuss his diagnosis. Bullock said she honoured his wishes, despite the immense emotional burden of keeping such a life-changing experience largely private.
Randall, a model-turned-photographer, died aged 57 in August 2023 after a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. His family had previously confirmed that he chose to keep his illness private.
Bullock Began Grieving Years Before His Death
Speaking to Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, Bullock described Randall's diagnosis as 'traumatic' and explained why she remained silent about his condition.
'I wasn't allowed to speak about it. That was the request, and I tried — I honoured it,' she said.
While Bullock understood why Randall wanted privacy, she admitted that the decision left her feeling isolated as she tried to navigate his illness and support their family. The situation became particularly difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions and uncertainty added another layer of isolation.
'I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,' Bullock revealed, explaining that Randall 'was ill for half of our relationship'.
Her most poignant reflection came when she described the experience of losing the person she knew before his physical death.
'My person left a lot earlier than the body left,' she said. Bullock added that she did not fully process the grief at the time because she was focused on simply getting through each day.
A Private Battle During the Pandemic
Bullock recalled the difficult process of trying to understand what was happening to Randall as his symptoms developed.
She described the ALS diagnosis as a process of elimination that could take around a year, involving repeated medical appointments and physical assessments. The family had to navigate tests involving everything from grip strength to breathing while quietly preparing for the possibility of Randall's condition progressing.
'You have to quietly plan,' Bullock said.
The actress explained that illness was not entirely unfamiliar to her, having experienced serious health problems within her family. But her greatest concern was how Randall's condition would affect the children.
'It doesn't scare me—not the illness itself, it doesn't scare me,' she said. 'I can see and be around just about anything.'
What worried her most was having two young children navigating the situation, particularly her daughter Laila, who regarded Randall as a father figure.
Only a Few Friends Knew
For a period, Bullock said her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, was the only person who knew about Randall's diagnosis. Eventually, she confided in a small group of close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Bateman's wife.
Bullock said the situation became even darker when Randall's physical illness was accompanied by mental health struggles.
'When the physical illness was then coupled with the mental health aspect of things—and it's something that people don't talk about... it was a trifecta that was pretty dark,' she said. Her comments underline just how carefully the family protected Randall's privacy while dealing with the realities of his illness behind closed doors.
Randall's Wish for Privacy Was Honoured
Randall's family announced his death in August 2023, saying he had died 'peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS'. They also confirmed that he had chosen early on to keep his journey with ALS private, adding that those around him had done their best to respect his wishes.
Bullock and Randall first met in 2015, and their relationship became more public later that year when they attended Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's wedding together. The couple went on to build a blended family, with Bullock raising Louis and Laila alongside Randall's daughter, Skylar Staten Randall.
Bullock Took Time To Heal
Following Randall's death, Bullock stepped away from the spotlight to focus on her family and her own recovery.
A source previously said she spent considerable time at home with her children and wanted to make sure they were in the best possible place before returning to work.
Now, with Practical Magic 2 set to hit cinemas on 10 September, Bullock is back in the public eye and has chosen to share more about the loss she experienced privately.
Her comments on SmartLess mark a significant change after years of silence. But rather than disregarding Randall's wishes, Bullock appears to be speaking about her own experience of grief—revealing for the first time how long before his death she had already begun saying goodbye to the person she loved.
