Shakira has asked a Barcelona court to change aspects of the visitation arrangements governing her two sons with former partner Gerard Piqué, four years after the couple announced their separation.
The Colombian singer and the former Barcelona footballer appeared before a court in Barcelona on Tuesday, 6 October, as proceedings began over the arrangements for their children, Milan and Sasha. The boys, aged 13 and 11 respectively, live with Shakira in Miami, while Piqué is based in Barcelona.
Proposed Custody Agreement
According to a statement from Shakira's representatives, her request does not seek to reduce the time the children spend with their father. Instead, she wants to share responsibility for travelling between Miami and Barcelona rather than placing it primarily on the children.
Shakira has proposed that Piqué travel to Miami during shorter holiday periods, allowing Milan and Sasha to avoid transatlantic trips when they would only be spending a limited amount of time with their father. Her representatives said the proposal is intended to reduce the disruption caused by long-distance travel and the resulting time difference.
The statement said the arrangement would allow the children to maintain their school, social and family routines for longer periods. Shakira's team described this as important to their emotional, physical and academic wellbeing.
Latest Court Proceedings
The latest court proceedings concern a review of an agreement reached by the former couple following their separation in 2022. Shakira and Piqué announced the end of their relationship in June that year after more than a decade together. They reached an agreement on their children later in 2022, with the arrangement allowing Shakira to move with Milan and Sasha to Miami.
The children have lived with Shakira in Miami since 2023, while Piqué has continued to spend time with them under the existing arrangements. The distance between the two cities has made travel an ongoing part of their parenting schedule.
Shakira's current request focuses specifically on how those journeys are handled. Her representatives have stressed that the proposal is not intended to interfere with Piqué's relationship with his sons.
Both Shakira and Piqué attended Tuesday's proceedings in Barcelona, where the existing visitation arrangements are being reviewed. Reports said the former couple had attempted to reach an agreement before the court hearing, but those discussions did not resolve the issue. The final decision will rest with the court.
Ongoing Negotiations
The hearing comes as Shakira remains in Spain for her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour. She is scheduled to perform the final date of her Madrid residency on 12 October, according to reports.
The court proceedings mark another legal development between the former couple, but the current dispute is narrower than the custody negotiations that followed their 2022 separation. Shakira's stated position is that the children should not be solely responsible for the long journeys required to maintain contact with their father.
For now, the existing arrangements remain subject to the court's decision. Neither the reported request nor the hearing establishes that Piqué has acted improperly, and there has been no reported ruling that changes the children's current visitation schedule.
