Taylor Swift stepped onto the red carpet at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) without her husband, Travis Kelce, on Sunday, 27 September, as the pop star celebrated one of the biggest nights of her career.
Swift arrived alone at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater for the ceremony, where she was honoured with the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors and competed for 11 awards.Kelce, however, was missing from the ceremony.
Travis Kelce Was Playing Football in Miami
While Swift was preparing for the VMAs in Los Angeles, Travis Kelce was in Miami Gardens, Florida, with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs faced the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium earlier on Sunday, with kickoff scheduled for 1 pm ET. The game ended with Kansas City securing a 24-10 victory, with Kelce catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the fourth quarter.

The timing made a joint appearance at the VMAs difficult. The ceremony began at 7.30 pm ET in Los Angeles, while Kelce's game was taking place roughly 2,700 miles away in Miami. Despite the distance, both had a major professional moment to celebrate by the end of the night.
The football star has previously made an effort to support Swift at major career moments, including flying from Chiefs minicamp to attend her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York in June.
Taylor Swift Had Plenty To Celebrate
Swift's solo appearance came during a particularly significant night for the singer. MTV and CBS named her the first recipient of the Artist Director Honors, a new award recognising artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling.

Swift has directed several of her own music videos, including 'The Man', 'cardigan', 'willow', 'Anti-Hero', 'Bejeweled', 'Fortnight' and 'The Fate of Ophelia'. She is also a seven-time Best Director nominee and four-time winner in the category. The award also added to Swift's record-setting night. She entered the ceremony with 30 VMA wins and became the most-awarded solo artist in the show's history after receiving the new honour.
The singer used the VMAs stage to premiere the music video for her new single 'Patient Zero', which stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and was directed by Swift herself.
Swift and Kelce's First VMAs as Newlyweds
The VMAs marked another notable milestone for Swift and Kelce, who married on 3 July. Swift had attended Kelce's first two Chiefs home games of the 2026 season, but she was not spotted at the team's trip to Miami. This time, the couple's schedules simply put them in different cities on the same day.

Taylor Swift nevertheless had a visible reminder of her marriage with her at the VMAs, wearing her wedding band alongside her engagement ring as she walked the red carpet. Although Kelce was not physically beside her, he has previously made a point of supporting Swift at major career milestones.
For one Sunday night, Swift had the VMAs and Kelce had the NFL. Still, both newlyweds had something to celebrate.
