The scepticism quickly spread across social media, with some commenters openly speculating that Taylor Swift or her team may have had a hand in creating the new category.

Another questioned the decision to honour Swift before Beyoncé, writing: 'Giving this to Taylor before Beyoncé is crazy work but I'm sure they made this award up just to get Taylor to show up'.

MTV, meanwhile, has presented the award as recognition of Swift's established work behind the camera rather than as a special favour.

The network says the Artist Director Honors celebrates artists with a 'sustained and influential body of work' who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a distinctive directorial voice.

Swift does have an extensive directing résumé. She is a seven-time VMA Best Director nominee and has won the category four times.

Her credits include 'The Man', 'cardigan', 'willow', 'All Too Well: The Short Film', 'Anti-Hero', 'Bejeweled', 'Lavender Haze', 'Fortnight', 'I Can See You', 'Karma', 'The Fate of Ophelia' and 'Opalite'.

Her directing work has also previously earned major recognition at the VMAs, including for 'All Too Well: The Short Film'.

Swift Is Already a Major VMA Contender

Swift has nine VMA nominations this year, second only to Madonna's 11, including a nomination for Video of the Year for 'The Fate of Ophelia'.

Swift currently shares the record for the most VMA wins with Beyoncé, with 30 awards. Her new directing honour will take her tally to 31, making her the most-awarded artist in the history of the ceremony.

Her new directing honour would therefore add to an already significant presence at the ceremony while also giving her a new record in the process.

For now, claims that Swift 'paid' for the new award remain unsubstantiated social media speculation.
