Taylor Swift's past wedding drama with the Kennedy family has returned to the spotlight following the death of Kyle Kennedy at 42. The singer attended Kyle's 2012 wedding to Liam Kerr with her then-boyfriend, Conor Kennedy, but the bride's mother later claimed she had asked the couple not to attend.

Kyle, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, died at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on 21 September 2026. Her death has brought fresh attention to the old dispute, which saw two very different accounts of Swift's appearance at the family wedding.

'Please Do Not Come'

The wedding took place at the Fairmont Copley Plaza hotel in Boston on 18 August 2012. Swift was 22 at the time and was dating Conor, who was 18 and a cousin of the bride. According to reports at the time, Kyle's mother, Victoria Gifford Kennedy, said Conor contacted her about an hour before the wedding to ask if he could bring Swift.

Victoria claimed that Conor had not replied to the wedding invitation and said she was worried the singer would draw attention away from her daughter on her big day. She said she sent a clear message asking the couple not to attend, but claimed they arrived anyway. Recalling the exchange, Victoria said: 'They texted me an hour before the wedding and asked if they could come. I responded with a very clear, "Please do not come."'

The bride's mother also claimed she approached Swift and asked her to leave twice. Describing their meeting, Victoria said: 'It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me.' Kathie Lee Gifford, who attended the wedding, also reportedly supported Victoria's account, saying the couple had been asked to leave.

Taylor Swift Denied Claims

Swift's representative strongly disputed the claim that the singer had turned up without an invitation. Her spokeswoman, Paula Erikson, said Swift had been invited and that the bride had thanked her for attending. The conflicting accounts left the story open to debate, with neither side's version fully resolving the disagreement.

Other reports from the wedding claimed Swift and Conor left during the reception meal before returning later. The incident drew attention because Swift was a rising music star, and her relationship with Conor had put her in the public eye alongside one of America's best-known families. However, the claims about the wedding remain disputed, and Swift's representative denied that she had crashed the event.

Swift and Conor's relationship was short-lived, lasting only a few months in 2012. Reports at the time suggested their busy schedules and time apart played a part in their split, as Swift prepared to release her album Red while Conor remained in Massachusetts. Claims that Swift bought a home near the Kennedy family to spend more time with him also circulated, but those reports were not confirmed.

Inside Her Kennedy Romance

Swift and Conor were linked from July to October 2012. Their relationship attracted attention because Conor belonged to the famous Kennedy family, while Swift was gaining fame as one of the biggest names in pop and country music. Their age difference and brief romance also became subjects of public interest.

During the relationship, reports claimed Swift bought a property in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, for $4.9 million (£3.6 million) to stay close to the Kennedy family. However, the reported reason for the purchase was never confirmed. The pair later split, with reports pointing to their demanding schedules and time apart as possible reasons for the breakup.

Although their relationship did not last, the wedding dispute remained one of the most talked-about stories from their time together. The two sides gave different accounts of whether Swift had been welcomed at the event, leaving questions about what happened behind the scenes. Kyle's death has now brought the old controversy back into public discussion.

Kyle Kennedy Dies at 42

Kyle died on 21 September 2026 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, according to her obituary. She was the daughter of Michael Kennedy and Victoria Gifford Kennedy, and the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. Her cause of death has not been made public.

Kyle married Liam Kerr in 2012, and the couple had three children, including a daughter, Josephine, who died shortly after birth. In 2020, Kyle suffered a serious spinal cord injury that left her living with paralysis and long-term health challenges. She later became an advocate for people with disabilities and worked to improve children's education.

Beyond her family ties, Kyle focused on early childhood education and better access to schooling. She also spoke up for people living with disabilities, including giving testimony at a Massachusetts State House hearing about health care discrimination. While her death has renewed interest in the 2012 wedding controversy, her work in education and disability rights remains an important part of her legacy.
