A New York woman's harsh coffee review has spiralled into a TikTok firestorm after viewers accused her of allegedly targeting Kawaii Cafe, a Vietnamese coffee shop in New York City, while appearing to drink coffee from somewhere else.
The backlash erupted after Kawaii Cafe's owner, Kim Lee, responded to the clip and said the cup, design and straw shown in the woman's video did not match the café's own packaging. The reaction quickly turned brutal, with one viewer writing, 'Sue her for defamation! It IS that serious'.
Kawaii Cafe Owner Says the Review Did Not Add Up
The now-deleted review was posted by a woman whose username was reportedly jetjet239. In the clip, she was seen walking down the street with a cup of coffee while criticising the drink as 'really horrible', a 'sugar bomb' and having 'no coffee flavour'.
At first glance, it looked like another blunt TikTok food review. But the story took a turn when Kawaii Cafe reposted the video and broke down why the business believed the review was misleading.
Lee said the café did not want drama, but wanted to set the record straight. According to the owner, the drink in the video did not appear to be from Kawaii Cafe at all.
She pointed to several details, including the cup, the packaging design and the straw. Lee then said she checked POS transactions, reviewed store camera footage and spoke with staff, but found no indication that the woman had visited the café.
That detail changed the entire tone of the conversation. What began as a negative coffee review quickly became a public debate about whether creators should face consequences when their content appears to misrepresent a small business.
TikTok Fury Turned the Clip Into a Small Business Backlash
Kawaii Cafe's response went viral, drawing millions of views and thousands of comments as users accused the reviewer of unfairly damaging an independent business. One viewer called the situation 'Such a weird thing to do', while another pushed the backlash further with the now-viral line, 'Sue her for defamation! It IS that serious'.
The controversy grew when Black Stone Coffee NYC appeared to respond, saying the drink seemed to have come from their shop instead. The café also clarified that it was not affiliated with the reviewer, adding, 'We would never feel the need to bring down another cafe, there is more than enough room for all of us!'
After the backlash spread, the reviewer reportedly changed her username multiple times before deleting her account entirely.
For many viewers, the issue was not simply that someone disliked a drink. People leave negative reviews all the time. The anger came from the allegation that the wrong business may have been framed in the review, leaving a small café to absorb the reputational damage.
That is why the story hit such a nerve. Small cafés do not have the same cushion as major chains. One viral TikTok can drive queues through the door, but it can also scare potential customers away before they ever try the product.
Fake Review Drama Is Now a Real Reputation Risk
The Kawaii Cafe controversy also taps into a larger anxiety around fake or misleading reviews. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission has already introduced a final rule targeting fake reviews and testimonials, including deceptive reviews that misrepresent real consumer experiences.
The rule is aimed at businesses and marketers, but the cultural message is bigger: online reviews are not harmless when they influence where people spend money. For small businesses, reputation is not an abstract branding concern. It affects foot traffic, sales and whether customers trust them enough to walk in.
That does not mean every bad review should be treated as malicious. Customers can dislike a drink, criticise a café or call something overhyped. Honest criticism is part of public-facing business.
But when a creator names a business, films content around it and gives a damaging verdict, viewers now expect receipts. In this case, TikTok users believed the receipts pointed in the opposite direction.
For Kawaii Cafe, the backlash has turned into an unexpected wave of support. Instead of letting the alleged review define the business, users rallied around the café and called out what they saw as an unfair hit on a small shop.
The internet loves a brutal review. But this time, the takedown got taken down.
