Erika says her husband offered to take their baby and food before the viral Giants clip and was grieving a childhood friend @onlyerikanicole / Instagram

The mother who went viral for carrying her baby, a backpack and three trays of food at a San Francisco Giants game has defended her husband, revealing that he had offered to help and was grieving the recent death of one of his oldest friends when cameras captured the moment.

Erika, who identified herself as the woman broadcasters dubbed 'mom of the year' during the Giants' game against the Minnesota Twins at Oracle Park on 22 September, says viewers saw only a few seconds of a much longer interaction. Her explanation, published Friday, 25 September, has now created a second viral debate: whether the added context changes what happened or whether the image still reflects a familiar imbalance in the physical and emotional labour women carry.

The response has become almost as divided as the original clip. Some viewers say Erika should be believed when she describes her own marriage and argue that caring for a grieving spouse does not automatically make a woman oppressed. Others maintain that, whatever happened before the cameras turned towards them, Ramses could still have reached for the baby or food when he saw his wife returning with her hands full.

Erika Says the Camera Missed His Offers To Help

Erika said Ramses offered to take their daughter Anastasia when she got up during the fifth inning, but she chose to keep the baby with her because the San Francisco night was cold and she also planned to change her nappy. While she was away, Erika texted him a photo of the food menu and decided to pick up brisket sandwiches and loaded fries as she passed the Field Club.

When she returned, Erika said Ramses moved her jacket so she could sit down, asked whether she wanted to eat first and offered to take the containers from her. She declined because she had already eaten before the game and knew he had not had a full meal that day. She also rejected the broadcasters' joking suggestion that Ramses had asked about forgotten ketchup, saying no such conversation happened.

There was another detail viewers could not have known. Erika said Ramses had recently lost a childhood friend who had been a gifted baseball player, and because there was no formal funeral or memorial service, she suggested the Giants game as a way for him to remember his friend. 'The camera showed what I was carrying in my hands. It couldn't show what he was carrying that night,' she wrote.

Some Viewers Say Erika's Own Answer Should Be Enough

Erika's account quickly found defenders who argued that the original conversation had gone from supporting a woman to refusing to believe her when she said she did not feel unsupported. One viral Instagram response argued that 'not every act of service is oppression', pointing out that relationships can involve one partner carrying more when the other is grieving, sick or overwhelmed.

The post also questioned why Erika's description of her own marriage was being dismissed after people initially claimed to be defending her. 'Marriage isn't a scoreboard,' the creator wrote, arguing that treating a spouse with extra care during grief could simply be an act of love rather than evidence of submission. Another commenter who read Erika's response said the context changed her initial view after she had first assumed Ramses was not being considerate.

Supportive responses also appeared beneath posts sharing Erika's statement. One commenter wrote that her closing words made her emotional and praised supportive fathers, while others focused on Erika's request to be heard rather than treated as a stranger who did not understand her own relationship.

Critics Still Ask Why She Had To Carry Everything

But plenty of viewers remained unconvinced, and the criticism shifted from what Ramses might have said off camera to what people could still see on screen. Beneath one Instagram post encouraging people to read Erika's explanation, a commenter replied, 'We saw what we saw', arguing that grief did not explain why Ramses did not immediately take the food as Erika approached the row.

Another Threads user argued that grief did not prevent Ramses from holding his own child while Erika collected the food. Other commenters made a similar point: even accepting Erika's version completely, they questioned why she was still the person physically carrying the baby, the food and the bag while also trying to settle into her seat.

Some went further and interpreted Erika writing a lengthy defence as another form of emotional labour. Erika has rejected that framing, saying Ramses did not want her to write the statement and would have preferred to let the controversy pass.

That disagreement has left the viral moment in a different place from where it started. The original argument was about whether Ramses should have helped; the follow-up is now about whether strangers should continue making that judgment after Erika says he did.

For Erika, the answer is clear. 'Supporting me also means listening when I tell you about my own life,' she wrote, before ending her statement with a defence of the man sitting beside her: 'Please believe me when I tell you I can only be so with the dad sitting next to me.'
