Comedian and screenwriter Zarna Garg says a routine visit to a Hermès store in Berlin turned frightening after she became trapped inside its bathroom for around 80 minutes, only to emerge to what she claims was complete silence from staff. The comedian alleges there was no apology, explanation or even a word of comfort for her or the children and team members who watched anxiously from outside.
What began with jokes and paper-towel origami eventually became a serious rescue effort, with Garg saying staff struggled to open the sliding door and alarms went off as a crowbar was used. After firefighters finally helped free her, she claims the only gesture from an employee was a bottle of champagne, which she and her team declined.
Garg Gets Trapped In Hermès Bathroom
Garg, an Indian-American comedian and lawyer, was in Berlin for her Million-Dollar Excuses comedy tour when the incident unfolded at the luxury store. She said the door initially seemed like a frustrating inconvenience, so she and her team filmed the situation and tried to keep the mood light while waiting for help.
Inside the bathroom, Garg said she passed the time counting paper towels and making an origami village, even joking with her family while the door refused to open. But as the minutes stretched into more than an hour, the humour faded and concerns grew about why she was still unable to get out.
The Frightening Rescue Attempt
Garg says her team eventually demanded that managers call the fire department after staff appeared unable to free her. She alleged employees were reluctant to damage the door because they wanted to protect it, leaving her increasingly worried about the situation.
She later claimed staff asked her to push the door from inside before using a crowbar, with alarms sounding during the attempt. Garg said she became frightened that the equipment could injure her, while her daughter and team remained outside watching the increasingly tense rescue effort.
Firefighters Finally Get Garg Out
After around an hour and 20 minutes, Garg says she was finally freed with the help of firefighters using specialised tools to pry the door open. Her immediate reaction, despite the ordeal, was relief that there had been no fire, given her concerns about being trapped behind a door she believed raised fire-safety questions.
Garg also described the bathroom door as a cheap and flimsy piece of plywood and questioned whether it was compliant with fire-safety requirements. Those claims have not been independently established, and the available material does not confirm whether the door breached any regulations.
Garg Says There Was No Apology
For Garg, the ordeal did not end when the door finally opened. She alleges that nobody apologised, offered an explanation or even made eye contact with her after she emerged, despite the fact that she had spent more than an hour trapped inside.
She said an employee instead approached with a bottle of champagne, which appeared to be offered as a peace offering. Garg and her team refused it, with the comedian making clear that after being locked inside for so long, a bottle of champagne was not what she wanted.
Her Family Watched The Ordeal From Outside
Garg was particularly troubled by the effect the incident had on the people waiting outside the bathroom. She said her children and team were watching in horror as the staff struggled to release her, adding that there was not even a word of comfort offered to them afterwards.
Her daughter Zoya later said the experience served as a reminder of the risks of being alone in an unfamiliar place. She said she was unsure how long it might have taken for her mother to escape had she not been surrounded by family and colleagues who continued pressing for help.
Garg Mocks Hermès In Her Rant
Despite describing the incident as frightening, Garg responded with the humour that has become a major part of her public persona. She drew a pointed comparison between Hermès bags, which she joked can be notoriously difficult to open and close, and the bathroom door that allegedly left her trapped.
Her final verdict was far less playful, branding the situation a tale of a 'useless bag, useless door, useless people'. The post has since attracted strong reactions from viewers, many of whom said they believed a simple apology and acknowledgement would have been more appropriate than a gift.
Garg has acknowledged that the luxury brand may have been cautious about speaking because of potential legal implications, noting her own legal background. For now, however, the incident remains based on Garg's account and footage, while any response from Hermès could provide further context about what happened inside the Berlin store.
