Alan Ritchson's disturbing account of the experiences that drove him to quit modelling has resurfaced online, bringing renewed attention to his claims of exploitation within the industry. In the widely shared interview clip, the actor said his agents repeatedly sent him to jobs where photographers allegedly attempted to molest him, despite his growing concerns about what was happening.
The Reacher star originally made the revelations during an appearance on Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, where he spoke candidly about his years as a young model. Ritchson recalled eventually confronting his agent over what he believed had become a dangerous pattern, while also describing the financial pressure that kept him accepting jobs despite feeling vulnerable.
The Exploitation in the Modelling Industry
Ritchson spoke about exploitation during his modelling years, childhood bullying and his efforts to separate his self-worth from professional success.
During the conversation, Ritchson described the modelling industry as a system that he believed facilitated predatory behaviour. He told Shepard that models could be passed between photographers and clients, while agents were aware of what was happening.
Ritchson recalled becoming increasingly angry after allegedly being sent to people who were attempting to molest him during modelling jobs. He said he confronted an agent and made clear that he did not want to participate in that environment.
'I just need to eat,' Ritchson recalled telling the agent, explaining that his motivation was simply to earn enough money to get by rather than pursue potentially lucrative opportunities at any cost.
The actor said he had found some modelling work relatively safe and straightforward. He specifically mentioned working regularly for J.C. Penney, describing it as a reliable source of income and comparing it with what he characterised as the more exploitative side of the industry.
Ritchson ultimately recalled one photoshoot that became the final straw. He said he went directly to the agency afterwards, confronted the agent who had sent him and told him he was done with modelling.
According to Ritchson, the agent acknowledged knowing what had happened but suggested that the opportunity had been worthwhile. Ritchson rejected that reasoning and said he walked away from the industry.
Public Statements on Sexual Abuse
His account is consistent with comments he made publicly in 2024, when he said he had been sexually assaulted by a well-known photographer during his modelling career. Ritchson said at the time that he immediately went to his agency afterwards and accused them of knowing what would happen. He quit modelling and said the photographs from that particular shoot were never published.
Ritchson's comments add further detail to an experience he has described as deeply damaging. On Armchair Expert, he also recalled encountering the same agent years later at the premiere of the first season of Reacher.
The meeting was particularly striking because Ritchson said his anger and frustration with modelling had ultimately helped push him towards acting. What began as an attempt to escape an industry he no longer trusted became the foundation for a career that would eventually make him an international action star.
Growing Up in a Military Family
The official Armchair Expert episode also explores Ritchson's upbringing in a military family, his unconventional journey from ballet to action films and his recently discussed ADHD and CPTSD diagnoses. He also spoke about EMDR therapy, resentment and the process of separating personal worth from career success.
The actor's revalations offer a look into the hidden world of modelling. In his account, the industry shows serious power imbalances, especially when younger models depend on agents and clients for their income and career opportunities.
For Ritchson, the decision to leave ultimately opened the door to acting. The experiences he described on the podcast remain a significant part of the story behind his journey to Hollywood.
