A Brazilian woman with a rare condition that caused uncontrollable breast growth described facing public scrutiny before undergoing surgery to remove 22 pounds of tissue. This rapid growth caused severe pain, limited her mobility, and made finding suitable clothing challenging.

Thaynara Marcondes, 22 at the time of the procedure, was diagnosed with gigantomastia, a rare condition marked by excessive breast growth. As it increasingly affected her daily life and public interactions, she decided to pursue surgery.

Strangers Began to Take Notice

Marcondes recalled that strangers stared and pointed as her breasts rapidly increased by 1.65 pounds (750 grams) per month. In an interview with CNN Brasil, she shared that some even suspected she was concealing stolen goods in her chest while at the supermarket.

'Once I went to the supermarket and people even started to think I was stealing products and hiding them in my breasts. Then I got worried,' she said.

This attention added to the physical difficulties she was already experiencing. Marcondes previously wore medium-sized shirts; however, as her body changed, even plus-size clothing no longer fit. She resorted to custom-made clothing and struggled to find a properly fitting bra.

Physical Effects of Rapid Growth

At their largest, her breasts weighed around 26 pounds combined, causing significant strain on her back, neck, and shoulders. These physical effects also extended beyond chronic pain.

Marcondes reported difficulty with routine activities such as cutting her toenails and putting on trainers. She stopped going to the gym due to back pain and, at times, required a wheelchair to get around.

Doctors initially suspected the unusual growth could be cancer-related. However, she was ultimately diagnosed with gigantomastia, a condition that can develop rapidly and may have no identifiable cause.

Understanding Gigantomastia

Gigantomastia is a rare condition involving excessive growth of breast tissue. Potential causes include hormonal changes, pregnancy, puberty, certain medications, and autoimmune disorders. These factors may vary among individuals.

Symptoms may include persistent musculoskeletal pain, poor posture, skin irritation, and infections beneath the breasts. This condition can make daily activities difficult and may cause emotional stress.

Social Media Users Respond

Marcondes's experience has received significant support on social media. Netizens have highlighted the physical challenges of her condition and the judgment she encountered for changes outside her control.

'Imagine being a child and one day your chest starts growing. You're told that's normal, but it keeps growing and it doesn't stop. Everyone judges you for something completely out of your control. I'm glad she got her surgery,' one commenter wrote.

Another commenter reflected on the daily physical burden Marcondes experienced, writing: 'I couldn't imagine how heavy it was for her to carry that all day. And I know she couldn't lay on her back due to the weight crushing on her ribs. Good for her watching herself. It's so strange how a gene can cause this to happen to any women.'

Surgery and Recovery

Marcondes underwent breast-reduction surgery on October 25, 2024. The procedure lasted over 10 hours, during which surgeons removed about 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of tissue.

She funded the procedure through donations, raising approximately R$40,000 (£6,000). After the operation, Marcondes expressed satisfaction with her appearance and a sense of relief.

Although the surgery addressed the excessive tissue growth, doctors reportedly cautioned that her breasts could enlarge again. Regular medical checkups are recommended, as gigantomastia may recur.
