Sara Cox has reportedly faced criticism from some BBC Radio 2 studio managers and technicians over how she handles mistakes during live broadcasts. Unnamed insiders claimed that her habit of calling out colleagues over on-air errors has left some staff feeling uncomfortable and on edge.
The 51-year-old presenter took over the BBC's The Radio 2 Breakfast Show in July following Scott Mills' departure. One insider said, 'A lot of studio managers and technicians don't like working on the show with her,' alleging that Cox's approach has affected the atmosphere among members of the production team.
Sara Cox Accused of Calling Out Staff on Air
The concerns reportedly relate to Cox's habit of drawing attention to mistakes while presenting live radio. One source alleged that she would call out colleagues and make it clear that an error was not her responsibility.
'She keeps pulling people up when there is a mistake that goes out on air and then throwing them under the bus,' the insider claimed, describing the behaviour as unfair and inconsistent with good teamwork.
A recording of an August broadcast reportedly captured Cox addressing a microphone issue involving travel presenter Ellie Brennan during the live show. During the exchange, Cox told Brennan: 'You're on the wrong mic there.'
She then questioned who had been adjusting the microphone, asking: 'Who's been messing with the mic? Why do you sound so weird?' Cox subsequently called into the control room and said: 'That's your cue, Anthony, to come in!' She also remarked: 'It's not a spectator sport this love, you know, you can come and get it.'

As a man identified as Anthony entered the studio, Cox joked about his arrival before referring to an earlier handover involving presenter Vernon Kay. 'Now if you were at the handover with Vernon that went perfectly last week, you'll know the name Anthony because that came up,' she said.
Cox laughed during the exchange. The incident made team members feel 'very uncomfortable'. The insider suggested Cox could have acknowledged the technical problem and turned it into a joke without appearing to shift responsibility to another staff member.
BBC Defends Sara Cox
The BBC defended Cox following the allegations, describing the exchange as a light-hearted moment between colleagues rather than evidence of a wider problem. 'Live radio is at its best when it feels spontaneous and real, and this was simply a light-hearted, on-air moment between colleagues,' a BBC spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also praised Cox's relationship with the Breakfast Show team, describing her presenting style as warm and lively. The BBC added that the 'authentic chemistry' between Cox and her colleagues was part of what attracted millions of listeners to the programme every weekday morning.
Sara Cox Replaces Scott Mills on Radio 2
Cox was appointed to replace Scott Mills after the BBC terminated his contract in March 2026. The decision followed the emergence of information concerning his personal conduct and reports about a historical police investigation into allegations of serious sexual offences involving a teenage boy. Mills was questioned by police in 2018, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided in 2019 that the evidential threshold for bringing charges had not been met. The investigation was subsequently closed in May 2019.
Cox began hosting the Breakfast Show in July, opening her first programme with Lizzo's 'It's About Damn Time' and CeCe Peniston's 'Finally'. She also joked that there was 'no message in the music'.
Cox's choice of songs for her first Breakfast Show reportedly upset some BBC staff, with one insider claiming that colleagues considered the selections insensitive given the circumstances surrounding Scott Mills' departure.
Some staff members were also reportedly unhappy with how the situation was handled, claiming they received little information about Mills' departure and were not given the opportunity to say goodbye. Cox and Mills had been close friends for around three decades, having worked together for many years.
