A father opened fire on alleged hijackers while travelling with his two children in Pinetown, Durban, South Africa, after armed men reportedly targeted his family in an incident captured on dashcam. The incident reportedly occurred on 9 October 2026 in the Pinetown area.

The footage shows the driver leaving his property with his daughter in the front passenger seat, while a boy believed to be his son stands near the gate. A vehicle allegedly linked to the attackers then approaches before two men drew their guns; the driver drew his in response, and a firefight ensued.

The video of the incident began circulating widely on social media on 22 October after it was released publicly by local South African authorities. It drew attention from online commentators due to the father's protective instincts for his children during the confrontation.

Dashcam Captures Alleged Hijacking Attempt

The recording shows the father and his daughter leaving their driveway in a bakkie, a type of light utility vehicle commonly used in South Africa. A boy believed to be his son remains near the gate as another vehicle passes and stops a short distance away.

One of the men allegedly ran towards the boy and held a firearm to his head. A second man reportedly got out of the vehicle, drew a gun, and fired at the driver. The father then drew his own firearm and returned fire through the vehicle's window.

The recording captures the bakkie moving forward before coming to a stop against a tree. Cracks are visible across the windscreen, while the driver continues firing from inside the vehicle.

As the shooting continues, the boy approaches the bakkie and appears to help his sister out of the front passenger seat. The sequence shows the children close to the confrontation while their father remains inside the damaged vehicle and continues firing through the window.

The father's actions during the confrontation have drawn attention to his efforts to protect his children as gunfire erupted. He remained inside the vehicle and returned fire while the children were nearby.

Police Confirm One Fatality After Alleged Hijacking Attempt

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said one suspect was fatally wounded after the alleged hijackers opened fire on the father, who returned fire. The remaining suspects fled the scene in their vehicle.

Police opened cases of attempted murder, attempted carjacking, and an inquest following the shooting along Lea Place in Pinetown on 9 October 2026. Although claims circulating online state that three men died, police reporting has confirmed only one fatality.
