Alex Eala has gone from battling on the US Open courts to sitting beside Anna Wintour at New York Fashion Week, leaving onlookers asking one question: 'Why is she there?'
The answer is simple: the 21-year-old Filipina tennis star has been putting in the work both on and off the court. Just weeks after her US Open campaign, Eala made her NYFW debut at Tory Burch, where she found herself in the front row alongside Wintour, Amanda Seyfried and Lauryn Hill.
But this was no random fashion invitation. Wintour had already singled out Eala at the US Open, praising her growing interest in fashion and describing her as a young star who clearly wants to learn about and follow the industry. And Eala did not stop at one show. Her first Fashion Week came with a packed itinerary spanning Tory Burch, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, putting the rising tennis star firmly on fashion's radar.
Ang laki ng gingagastos nina Heart Evangelista, Pia Wurtzbach and recently Anne Curtis. Hirap na hirap sila makakuha front row sa Fashion Week. And here we have Alex Eala talking to Anna Wintour. Same row. So kids excel in sports. U get front row seats & invites to Fashion Week. https://t.co/dqWXMdcn4e

Anna Wintour Had Already Noticed Eala
The biggest clue to Eala's NYFW invitation came before she even arrived in the front row.
On 26 August, Wintour discussed the increasingly close relationship between tennis and fashion during the US Open, mentioning Eala alongside style-conscious stars Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.
'You could see even in such a young star how interested she is in fashion and how she wants to learn about it and follow it,' Wintour said.
The fashion icon described sport and fashion as a 'wonderful' marriage, effectively recognising Eala as one of a new generation of athletes whose style is becoming part of their public identity.
That makes Eala's appearance beside Wintour at NYFW particularly significant. The tennis star was already on Wintour's radar before she took her first official Fashion Week front-row seat.
From the US Open to NYFW
Eala arrived in New York following her US Open campaign, where she reached the third round before exiting the tournament. She then swapped the tennis court for the fashion circuit, making her NYFW debut at Tory Burch's Spring/Summer 2027 show at Gotham Hall on 10 September.
There, she sat front row alongside Wintour, actress Amanda Seyfried and singer Lauryn Hill.
Rather than treating the appearance as a one-off, Eala went on to attend major showcases from Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, giving her a packed Fashion Week itinerary. The WTA highlighted her appearances at all three shows.
At Michael Kors, Eala again shared the front row with Wintour at the Museum of Modern Art's Sculpture Garden.
She then attended Calvin Klein, where she was seated front row in an all-white ensemble featuring pieces from the Calvin Klein Collection by Veronica Leoni. For a first Fashion Week, it was a remarkably busy introduction to New York's fashion scene.
She Has Earned Her Spotlight
Eala's growing fashion profile comes after years of work on the tennis circuit. She has already made history for the Philippines, including becoming the first Filipino player to win a junior Grand Slam singles title when she claimed the girls' singles crown at the 2022 US Open.
Her professional career has since continued to build momentum, turning her into one of the country's most recognisable young sporting stars.
That matters when considering her place in fashion.
Eala is not simply a celebrity attending a designer show. She arrives with an established sporting career, an international audience and a genuine interest in style. Her growing presence at fashion events feels less like a sudden celebrity crossover and more like an extension of the profile she has been building through tennis.
Fashion Is Part of Her Identity
Eala's interest in fashion also predates her NYFW debut.
She has worked with Filipino designers and used fashion to showcase her cultural identity at international events. Her appearance at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Madrid, for example, featured a modern Filipiniana designed by her uncle, Filipino designer Rhett Eala.
She has also spoken about wanting to work with more Filipino designers and has described her personal style as 'girly', 'confident' and 'a little edgy'.
That makes Wintour's comments particularly interesting. The fashion editor was not simply noticing what Eala happened to be wearing. She was recognising an athlete who appears genuinely interested in understanding the industry.
So, Why Is She There?
The answer becomes clearer when the timeline is put together.
Eala has worked hard to establish herself in tennis, developed a clear interest in fashion and caught the attention of one of the industry's most influential figures.
Then came the front row.
Within days of completing her US Open campaign, she was attending three major NYFW shows, twice appearing alongside Wintour and mixing with some of fashion and entertainment's biggest names.
Wintour's recognition does not mean Eala has landed a Vogue cover, campaign or formal collaboration, and there is no evidence to suggest one has been confirmed. But that is not really the point. For Eala, the bigger win may be that her hard work in sport is opening doors in fashion, too.
And with Anna Wintour already taking notice, the question may soon change from 'Why is she there?' to 'What's next for Alex Eala?'
