Who says childhood favourites have to stay in the toy box? Converse has teamed up with Sanrio's My Melody and Kuromi for a collection that makes a rather convincing argument for keeping a little cartoon nostalgia in your grown-up wardrobe. The result is sugar, spice, and grunge with a bow.
The latest Converse x Hello Kitty and Friends collection celebrates the unlikely friendship between the pink-hooded My Melody and her mischievous counterpart, Kuromi. Their contrasting personalities take centre stage across a range of footwear and apparel, including a black leather Chuck 70 high-top that gives the classic sneaker a 'kawaii' makeover.
Converse announced the collection on Instagram, writing, 'My Melody and Kuromi are bringing their iconic friendship to Converse.' The brand confirmed that the collaboration is available through its website, with the featured Chuck 70 My Melody & Kuromi model priced at $100 (around £75) in the US. Childhood nostalgia should probably have a dedicated aisle at the department store.
Grunge With a Bow: Meet the Kuromi and My Melody Chuck 70
The Sanrio-themed Chuck 70 arrives in black full-grain leather with embossed illustrations of both Sanrio characters covering the upper part. The tonal detailing gives the shoes an almost gothic texture, while pale-pink ribbon laces and a matching Converse ankle patch add a softer touch.
Look closely, and the design gets even sweeter. My Melody and Kuromi appear on the co-branded insole and heel label, with character-inspired lace charms adding another playful detail. An OrthoLite insole and an additional lace option put some comfort and quirk in your step.
Converse's promotional photographs also showcase a split pink-and-black high-top featuring both characters, character-faced slip-ons, a miniature sneaker keyring, and a grey Kuromi hoodie. It's a wardrobe for anyone whose personality changes between pastel pink and punk-rock black.

Fans Want More Sanrio in Their Sneakers
The collection's Instagram debut drew attention from Sanrio fans, including some already wondering what Converse should release next.
'Can we please do another round of the customized Sanrio converse options? It was soo good,' commented Instagram user Gotholita, recalling the brand's previous customisation offering. Another commenter kept things simple with a single-word verdict that truly said it all: 'cute'.
The appeal is easy to understand. My Melody's sweetness and Kuromi's rebellious streak make an unexpectedly good fashion pairing, especially when neither character has to surrender her signature style. It's the sort of collaboration that lets fans embrace their softer side without giving up their darker wardrobe. Cuteness with teeth that isn't afraid to smile or bite.
Converse and Sanrio Never Go Out of Style
Converse has been making footwear since 1908, with its iconic Chuck Taylor All Star becoming a staple of basketball courts before finding a second career in music, streetwear, and alternative fashion. Decades later, its familiar rubber toe cap and high-top silhouette remain remarkably famous.
Sanrio has enjoyed similar staying power. My Melody debuted in 1975, while Kuromi arrived in 2005 as her mischievous rival in the Onegai My Melody series. Their contrasting personalities eventually became part of their charm, attracting fans who see a little of themselves in one character, or both.
Perhaps that's why the collaboration feels so natural. Converse brings the timeless sneaker that mysteriously goes with everything, Sanrio brings the childhood favourites, and together they prove that growing up doesn't necessarily mean growing out of the things you love. After all, who says you can't have a rebellious streak and still tie it up with a pretty pink bow?
