Eight years, an extravagant wedding, and enough family drama to bankrupt a therapist later, Crazy Rich Asians is finally getting its sequel. However, fans have already noticed that one very important guest appears to be missing from the reunion.

HBO has officially announced an eight-episode follow-up to the 2018 romantic comedy, bringing back several familiar faces. Yet Gemma Chan, who played the fabulously wealthy and equally fashionable Astrid Leong, was noticeably absent from the initial casting announcement. For viewers who spent years waiting for Astrid's next chapter, the omission has sparked a call for her return.

HBO Is Bringing Back the Crazy Rich Family

The upcoming series will reunite Constance Wu as Rachel Chu, Henry Golding as Nick Young, and Ronny Chieng as Eddie Cheng, with Michelle Yeoh returning as the formidable Eleanor Young in a recurring role.

Original screenwriter Adele Lim will serve as showrunner, while director Jon M. Chu and author Kevin Kwan are among the executive producers. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the story continuing after the events of the original film.

However, neither Chan nor Harry Shum Jr., who briefly appeared as Astrid's former fiancé Charlie Wu, has been confirmed for the reunion. Their absence is particularly conspicuous considering Astrid and Charlie's romantic storyline in Kwan's second novel, China Rich Girlfriend. The film's post-credits scene also teased their reunion, giving audiences a romantic cliffhanger that has been hanging around since 2018. After all, how could two characters lock eyes like that and not be part of the story when it picks up?

Fans Demand for the Return of Astrid

Under an Instagram post by Disruptions discussing Chan's omission, viewers made their casting priorities abundantly clear.

'It's gonna flop if she isn't in it🕯,' one commenter warned, while another delivered a considerably shorter ultimatum: 'No Gemma no watch.'

For some, Astrid practically owned the original film. 'Let's be honest - she stole the movie,' one fan declared.

Others recalled her memorable confrontation with her husband, particularly the line about refusing to make him feel like a man. One commenter insisted the scene had 'changed so many women.' And apparently, eight years have done very little to diminish that particular brand of Astrid appreciation.

Where Is Harry Shum Jr.?

Chan isn't the only name audiences are hunting for. The prospect of losing Charlie alongside Astrid has prompted a second round of casting demands.

'IT WAS THEIR STORY NEXT WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY ARE NOT SURE YET 🫠,' one viewer protested.

Another explained why the pair mattered beyond the film's romantic tease: 'The second book has SOO MUCH Astrid and Charlie storyline, they have to be included!'

One particularly determined commenter even proposed that Grey's Anatomy write out Shum's character if necessary to make room for Charlie. That is quite a dramatic scheduling solution, but after eight years, patience is evidently becoming a luxury even the Young family cannot afford.

Gemma Chan's Return Has Yet to Be Confirmed

The casting announcement does not establish that Chan or Shum will be excluded. Their involvement simply remains unconfirmed, and HBO has not announced the complete ensemble.

Some Instagram commenters are optimistic that negotiations or later casting announcements could still bring the actors back. Others have already started treating Astrid's absence as a dealbreaker.

HBO has eight episodes to revisit Singapore's wealthy elite, but viewers have made one thing unmistakably clear: they want Astrid's love story included in the inheritance.

After all, the franchise may be called Crazy Rich Asians, but for these fans, a reunion without Gemma Chan would be looking suspiciously poor.
