For years, football fans have watched Cristiano Ronaldo hand over his match-worn shirt to young supporters, lucky pitch invaders and fellow players after games. It has become one of his most recognisable traditions, often creating unforgettable moments for those fortunate enough to receive one of football's most sought-after souvenirs.

What many supporters never realised, however, is that those generous gestures are not actually free. According to former Manchester United teammate Ben Foster, professional footballers are required to pay for every shirt they give away. That means Ronaldo has reportedly spent tens of thousands of pounds funding a fan-favourite tradition that has followed him throughout his extraordinary career.

Ben Foster Reveals the Hidden Football Rule

The surprising revelation came from former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster, who played alongside Ronaldo during his first spell at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2009. Speaking on his 'Cycling GK' YouTube channel, Foster explained that professional footballers are required to pay for every match shirt they decide to give away.

'Cristiano Ronaldo gives his shirt away pretty much every single game, but what you don't know is us footballers actually have to pay for every single shirt we give away', Foster said. It is a rule that many supporters have never heard of, mainly because shirt exchanges and gifts have become such a normal part of football culture.

The Numbers Quickly Add Up

Using Ronaldo's career tally of around 1,100 senior appearances, Foster assumed the Portuguese superstar had given away roughly one shirt per match. While he admitted it was only an estimate, it was still enough to produce a remarkable figure.

With current Manchester United shirts costing around £100 and older shirts generally selling for between £50 and £60, Foster settled on an average price of £70 per shirt. Multiply that by approximately 1,100 shirts and the total comes to an estimated £77,000 spent simply on gifting match-worn jerseys to fans and fellow players.

A Small Price for Ronaldo

The Portuguese icon became one of sport's first billion-dollar earners and has built a fortune worth well over £500 million through football contracts, endorsements and business ventures. During his return to Manchester United, he reportedly earned around £385,000 per week, meaning the estimated lifetime cost of his shirt giveaways would have been covered in well under a week's wages.

Even so, the revelation offers a different perspective on one of Ronaldo's most familiar traditions. While the estimated £77,000 is only a fraction of his wealth, it highlights that every shirt handed to a grateful fan or young supporter came at a personal cost that many people simply never knew existed.

His Generosity Goes Beyond Shirts

Over the years, Ronaldo has donated millions to charitable causes around the world. In 2011, he auctioned his European Golden Boot for £1.2 million to help fund the construction of schools in Gaza. He has also served as an ambassador for Unicef and World Vision, using his global profile to support humanitarian campaigns beyond football.

His generosity has extended to his own career earnings as well. Following Real Madrid's Champions League triumph in 2014, Ronaldo reportedly shared his £450,000 bonus rather than keeping the entire reward for himself, further cementing his reputation as one of football's most generous stars away from the pitch.

Helping Families in Need

He donated £120,000 to the cancer centre that treated his mother, Dolores, in Madeira, while he also paid around £55,000 for life-changing brain surgery for young Erik Ortiz Cruz. Although Ronaldo has occasionally attracted criticism for his reactions during matches or moments of frustration on the pitch, stories such as Foster's reveal another side of the football legend.

For many supporters, a Ronaldo shirt is far more than a piece of fabric. It is a treasured keepsake linked to a special memory. Knowing that he personally covered the cost of those gifts only adds another layer to a tradition that has delighted fans throughout his extraordinary career.
