Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant claims a police officer pointed a gun at him in front of his two daughters during a confrontation in a Texas parking lot that ended with him being handcuffed and cited for assault by contact.

The 37-year-old former NFL wide receiver described the encounter as 'very one-sided' after a traffic dispute escalated into an altercation involving several people in Southlake on Sunday, 25 October.

Bryant also alleged that one of the men threatened to shoot him before police arrived. Officers said they drew their firearms as a precaution after receiving reports of a possible weapon, although no firearms were recovered at the scene.

Traffic Dispute Escalates Into Police Confrontation

The incident occurred at around 12.59pm on Sunday, 25 October, in a retail parking lot in the 2200 block of FM 1709 in Southlake, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb approximately 25 miles north-west of Dallas. According to a Southlake Police Department news release issued on Monday, 26 October, the dispute began near Kimball Avenue after Bryant said another driver had cut him off.

Both parties subsequently went to a nearby parking lot, where the argument escalated into an alleged assault. Police responded to reports of a fight involving multiple people, with several callers also reporting a possible weapon.

Officers temporarily detained several people as they investigated the confrontation, but no firearms were recovered at the scene, according to police. Bryant was cited for assault by contact, a Class C misdemeanour, and released at the scene.

The citation does not amount to a criminal conviction, and the available information does not establish the full circumstances of the alleged assault. Bryant's account of the confrontation should therefore be distinguished from the police department's description of events.

Footage Bryant provided to sports outlet OutKick shows the former Cowboys receiver lying on the ground in handcuffs alongside several other men as officers respond. Bryant's girlfriend recorded the video while she was present with his two daughters.

An officer can be seen holding a rifle in the footage, but the available video does not independently establish whether the weapon was pointed directly at Bryant. Although, Bryant maintains that an officer pointed a gun at him while his daughters were present.

Bryant Criticises Police Response

Bryant has described the encounter as 'very one-sided', expressing dissatisfaction with how the confrontation was handled. He also alleged that one of the men threatened to shoot him before police arrived, although the available footage does not independently confirm the alleged threat.

Bryant acknowledged knocking a mobile phone out of one man's hand, according to his account to OutKick. He has maintained that he acted in self-defence, although the precise circumstances of the exchange remain unclear.

The police department said officers drew their firearms after receiving reports of a possible weapon and temporarily detained several people during the investigation. Southlake police provided a written statement but declined to give an interview about the incident.

Bryant was reportedly instructed to appear at Southlake Municipal Court on or before 20 November 2026 in connection with the citation. The court date does not indicate that he has been found guilty, and the outcome of any proceedings was not established in the reports available at the time of publication.

Bryant played eight seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He earned three Pro Bowl selections and first-team All-Pro honours in 2014, when he led the NFL with 16 touchdown receptions.

He finished his Cowboys career with 531 receptions, 7,459 receiving yards and 73 touchdowns before signing with the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad in 2020. He did not appear in a regular-season game for Baltimore.
