Foot Locker’s new Crenshaw Rec brings Nike, exclusive drops and community events to Los Angeles FACEBOOK/FOOT LOCKER

Foot Locker is bringing a major new sneaker destination to Los Angeles' Crenshaw neighbourhood, but this is no ordinary trainer shop.

The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker is set to open on 22 August at 3222 W Slauson Ave, combining Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse products with exclusive local collections, basketball facilities, creative spaces and community events. The ambitious project is being presented as a new model for retail, putting sport, sneaker culture and the Crenshaw community at the centre of the experience.

The location is particularly significant. The store is being developed with Nike and local community leaders, while The Marathon Brand, founded by the late Nipsey Hussle, is also involved, tying the project to an area with deep roots in Los Angeles' music, fashion and streetwear culture.

Nike, Exclusive Collections, and a Store Built To Gather

For sneaker fans, the biggest draw will be the product.

The Crenshaw Rec will carry Nike, Jordan Brand, and Converse, as well as merchandise created specifically for the location. Among the exclusive offerings is a Crenshaw High School x Nike Team Shop collection, while Los Angeles designer Gavin Mathieu of Supervsn Studios has created a capsule collection for the store.

That gives the new location something beyond the standard Foot Locker shopping experience: products and collaborations designed specifically around the neighbourhood.

But shoppers will not simply be walking into a traditional retail floor.

The Crenshaw Rec features an open gym, an equipment room, creative workspaces and a resource centre designed to host programming throughout the year. Local businesses and entrepreneurs will also have opportunities to participate through pop-ups, giving the space a role beyond selling trainers and clothing.

Foot Locker is also introducing its Crenshaw Striper Programme, a local hiring initiative intended to create employment opportunities while allowing residents to play a direct role in shaping the store.

Brett O'Brien, Foot Locker's senior vice-president and chief marketing officer, said: 'The Crenshaw Rec by Foot Locker reflects our commitment to investing in the communities that have shaped our brand and continue to move sneaker culture forward.'

The Marathon connection adds a powerful link to Crenshaw’s history

Nipsey Hussle's Legacy and a Packed Opening Weekend

The store's connection to The Marathon gives the launch an emotional link to Crenshaw's history.

Samiel Asghedom, co-founder of The Marathon Brand and Nipsey Hussle's brother, said his family had grown up around the shopping centre where the store is located.

He recalled how Hussle once sold mixtapes from the car park, adding that he believed his brother would have been proud to see the area continue creating opportunities for young people.

That local connection will be central to the opening weekend.

On 22 August, the Crenshaw Rec will host a Community Swap Meet and 3v3 basketball tournament, bringing together local vendors, community partners and special guests. The programme is designed to turn the store's launch into a neighbourhood event rather than simply another retail opening.

And the activities are intended to continue long after opening day. Planned programming includes music academies, run clubs, barber shop cuts and educational workshops, alongside other community-focused events.

For Foot Locker and Nike, the Crenshaw Rec therefore represents more than a new address. It is an attempt to rethink what a sneaker shop can be when retail is built around a specific community and its culture.

For Crenshaw, meanwhile, the project brings Nike products, exclusive fashion and sport into a space deliberately designed to reflect the neighbourhood itself, making the new Foot Locker destination as much about connection as it is about the next must-have pair of trainers.
