Hayden Panettiere's final hours have taken a darker turn after a Narcan dispensing device was reportedly found on a mattress inside the South Carolina apartment where the actress died. Yet the most important question remains unanswered: who received the dose?

The discovery comes alongside emergency dispatch references to an overdose and cardiac arrest. However, officials have stressed that the cause and manner of Panettiere's death are still pending.

Narcan Found Inside the Apartment

Sources in Greenville, South Carolina, said Narcan was discovered inside the residence where Panettiere was found unresponsive, with the device used to administer it reportedly located on a mattress. Narcan is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a potentially fatal opioid overdose, but its presence alone does not establish that Panettiere suffered an overdose.

That distinction is crucial because investigators have not publicly confirmed that an opioid was responsible for her death. The Greenville County Coroner's Office said an autopsy found no trauma that contributed to her death, while the official cause and manner remain pending further investigation and additional studies.

Two Ambulances Deepen the Mystery

Emergency communications reportedly included references to an 'overdose' and CPR being performed after responders were called to the residence. The initial emergency call was also linked to a woman believed to be in cardiac arrest, with first responders later finding Panettiere unresponsive and beginning advanced cardiac life support.

Adding another layer to the mystery, two ambulances reportedly rushed to the property, yet neither transported anyone from the residence. That has left an obvious unanswered question surrounding the Narcan: if it was administered, was Panettiere the person who received it, or was it intended for someone else at the property?

Epinephrine Was Also Used at the Scene

Emergency crews reportedly used epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, during the resuscitation attempt.

The medication is commonly used during cardiac arrest, making its reported use consistent with the emergency call describing a woman in cardiac arrest.

Despite those efforts, Panettiere was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:32 p.m. on Sunday, 16 August, after responders had attempted advanced life support.

Authorities have not said that the use of epinephrine or the presence of Narcan establishes a specific cause of death.

No Signs of Trauma Found

The Greenville Police Department said the preliminary investigation had not indicated signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An acquaintance of Panettiere was reported to have made the 911 call, and the case is being investigated by police alongside the Greenville County Coroner's Office.

The coroner confirmed that an autopsy was completed on Monday, 17 August, but no traumatic injuries were found that would have contributed to her death. Toxicology and other additional studies may therefore become important in determining exactly what happened before the actress was discovered unresponsive.

Brian Hickerson Also at the Home

Panettiere's longtime on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was also reportedly staying at the residence around the time of her death. Hickerson, who grew up in the Greenville area, has not been reached since news of Panettiere's death emerged, according to the supplied report.

The pair had a complicated history, but Hickerson spoke warmly about Panettiere in May and said he wanted to see her flourish. His presence at the residence is part of the circumstances investigators may need to establish, but it does not by itself indicate wrongdoing or connect him to the actress's death.

Cause of Death Still Unknown

For now, the Narcan device is an important piece of the puzzle, but it is not the final answer to Hayden Panettiere's death. The discovery may raise questions about a possible opioid emergency, yet officials have not confirmed that she overdosed, nor have they identified who may have received the medication.

Panettiere, who was 36, was known for roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, and she leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya. Until the coroner releases a definitive finding, the circumstances surrounding her final moments remain under investigation, with the central mystery still unresolved: what happened inside that apartment before help arrived?
