Eighty-two thousand fans watched as two hands lifted the lid off a trunk designed to create a dramatic moment. Inside was the FIFA World Cup trophy, weighing 6.175 kg and made of solid 18-carat gold and malachite.
The Louis Vuitton case surrounding the trophy took artisans several weeks of hand-painting, hand-stitching, and meticulously crafted leatherwork to complete. The unveiling took place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with tennis star Carlos Alcaraz and actress Jung Ho-yeon presenting it on the pitch ahead of the final.
This is the fifth time Louis Vuitton has built one of these cases, a tradition stretching back to South Africa in 2010, and the 2026 version leans harder into spectacle than any before it. The trunk has become almost as talked about as the trophy sitting inside it, a prize so valuable that its packaging now gets its own reveal.
Every Detail Traces Back to the 1860s
The case is wrapped entirely in Louis Vuitton's signature Monogram canvas in the house's classic gold-and-brown colourway.
Two front-opening panels carry a hand-painted golden V, standing for both Victory and Vuitton, rather than being printed or stamped on.
Leather lozine trim runs along every edge, while gold-plated brass corner protectors, a heavy-duty lock, and a set of clasps echo the hardware Louis Vuitton has used since the 1860s.
Chairman and CEO Pietro Beccari stated that the tournament's closing ceremony was designed around the same gold-and-brown palette, making the trunk a perfect fit for the occasion.
What Happens When You Open the Lid
When you open the case, the contrast in texture is apparent. The interior is lined with soft, light beige leather that molds perfectly around the trophy's irregular shape, ensuring it stays securely in place during transport and on the walk to the pitch.
Stamped discreetly into the lid is a commemorative badge marking the partnership between Louis Vuitton and FIFA, a detail few fans watching at home will ever get close enough to see. Every stitch inside serves the same purpose as the exterior hardware, which is keeping a one-of-a-kind object completely still.
A Debut Sixteen Years in the Making
Louis Vuitton first previewed the 2026 trunk on 14 July at its Fifth Avenue store in New York, days ahead of the final. Since 2010, the house has built a trunk for every World Cup, following the trophy through Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022. This tradition will continue with the largest edition yet—a 48-team, 104-match tournament held across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Louis Vuitton regards the trunk as a bespoke, non-commercial piece and has never disclosed the price. A separate, purchasable capsule exists, including a Coffret 8 Montres watch case and a Malle Courrier Lozine 110 travel trunk, each carrying the same golden V. However, the pricing for those pieces has not been made public either.
The trunk that actually carried the trophy is heading back to the FIFA Museum in Zurich once the tournament closes, its price tag as guarded as the gold it was built to hold.
