Seventeen years after 20th Century Fox let Jennifer's Body tank at the box office, the studio may be quietly reviving the film for the audience it initially neglected. Dread Central reports that a production listing points to an October shoot in Vancouver, with Diablo Cody writing and Karyn Kusama directing, and that Megan Fox is locked in while Amanda Seyfried is expected to return.
Although, the studio hasn't issued any official statement, Seyfried has spent over a year teasing the project without committing. In an interview in 2025, she mentioned that she thought they were 'making another one', before walking it back with a wink.
Still, that uncertainty hasn't dented fan hype. One viral comment put it simply: 'It's a great day to be gay.' Another was more direct: 'MAKE THEM GIRLFRIENDS!'
Why the Original Never Stood a Chance
The excitement makes sense given the 2009 history. The film's R-rating locked out most of the teenage audience, while marketing leaned entirely into Fox's sex appeal to target young men.
It opened to just $6.8 million against a $16 million budget and was dismissed by critics.
What got lost in that campaign was Cody and Kusama's actual story: a predatory, intense friendship that fans rightfully read as queer romance.
Cody later confirmed as much: 'I think it's pretty obviously a queer relationship between Needy and Jennifer. The subtext was there.'

Fox echoed this, saying Needy was the one genuinely in love. Cody's passion for the genre hasn't faded either. Her 2024 film Lisa Frankenstein, set in the same universe, proved she's still producing campy, female-led horror comedy fifteen years on.
The Lore Obstacle: How Do You Revive Jennifer?
The biggest narrative hurdle is that Jennifer died at the end of the original, stabbed through the heart by Needy. Seyfried has already floated a solution. Alongside co-star Adam Brody, she pitched a resurrected Jennifer and joked about casting Brody as the devil who caused the mess.
It's a casting idea that fits the original's humour perfectly. 'We're making another one', Seyfried told Brody. She wouldn't sign on without Fox. While speculative, it suggests Cody is writing forward from the ending rather than ignoring it.

What Fans Actually Want
This history is why fans demand the subtext be made explicit this time. As one comment summed up: 'This is for us!! The gays, the freaks, the people who love woman rage horror!' Another was blunter: 'If it's not a lesbian love story, I don't want it.'
There is underlying tension, too. Disney — which now owns 20th Century — would be profiting from a film it once mishandled, and neither 20th Century nor Searchlight has centred a mainstream queer romance in a major horror franchise. The real hurdle isn't the R-rating but corporate commitment to the relationship.
Legacy sequels are having a moment, from Scream to I Know What You Did Last Summer. But most sell nostalgia for their existing fanbase. Jennifer's Body 2 isn't a cash grab. It's a course correction aimed at the audience that was originally left out.
